Death really ?

I just posted something and it got me thinking about death, I think most will agree that we need to be punished but does it need to be death ?
  • Clones - So what if were actually clones, could explain how we traveled to another star system, so anyone that has played EvE will know where I'm going with this, so if we die a system on our backpack would send a signal back to your base/pod/ship and say hay he died activate another clone, you would then spawn again as a fresh clone.

Your Old body would be where it died with your things intact however the longer you take to get back to it the higher the chance that it will be gone.

The longer the body remains on the floor the more things eat it, say every minute a fish comes in and takes a bite with each bite a bit of flesh and inventory is gone, if you take to long you lose it all, get there fast enough and you save it all.

Possible Body augments Upgrades(LOST ON FRESH CLONE).
Float : This could offer up upgrade options like when I die float my corpse to the surface so its safe.
Beacon : This will activate on death showing your fresh clone where you died.
Fish Repellent : Increase the duration between attacks on your corpse giving you more time to recover it.
Homing System : (end game ? Expensive) a system that activates on death and like a little drone thrusts its way back to your base.

    Risk and Loss..

In a nut shell with this system the further away from your base/spawn location the worse it is for you the longer your going to take getting back to salvage your things the higher the chance that you will lose everything, so if your all the way out at the aurora and you die there would be a good chance you have lost everything due to the time taken to get back out there.

but if you die outside your front door then less of an issue.
  • No Death - What if we don't die at all, what if when we take a killing blow or drown our suit's activate a life saving function that rapidly floats us to the surface where it slowly regains our health until were alive, think DayZ unconscious(without the bugs) so a shark bites you you get knocked out float the surface and have to wait x amount of time until your life support system has solved your health issues and then you can get back to swimming around.

When this knockout happens you could also shed a few items out your bag but essentially what your losing is time, the time to get to the surface and then the time it takes for your life support system to heal you up, the deeper you go the longer this death time would take.

Games like World Of Warcraft had this time out on death thing thanks to its graveyard run, DayZ had the unconscious timer there are tons of games that went this route and it works.

@Taiphoz - I don't agree with the idea of introducing a game mechanism that allows one to visit one's own corpse.

    Sorry. :|

Subnautica is a lively place in some locations. It's safe to assume there won't be too much left of one's previous incarnation for very long, at least. The only benefit that I can see from this game mechanism is the retrieval of 'unique' loot, although I feel that it would be far simpler to respawn lost unique loot items in different locations. I fear that adding this mechanism would serve no useful purpose in terms of enhanced game play.

Simplest action/reaction/reward/punishment mechanism: Stick your head in a Reaper's face, and you will die.
Stuff, you will lose, young Skywalker.

Secondly, I would be more inclined to avoid re-visiting any area where the locals may have chewed on me like a doggy-treat.

Other folks might feel the same way.
