This is going to be a long post.
There are several types of creatures I'm wanting to see in subnautica.
#1) camouflaged creatures
the leafy sea dragon is an example of a camouflaged creature. this is a simple concept that doesn't require further explanation.
#2) creatures that react to your presence
fanned tube worms (which you might recognize from the movie Avatar) are a real animal that thrive in reefs. when you touch them, they retract into their tube.
I don't know a lot about this fish, but it reminds me of a peacock. I imagine certain fish using a defense mechanism of puffing out thier fins to look bigger like birds do with their feathers.
With both of these animals, I'm looking for a mob that reacts to the player in a way that is not simply violent, which the game already has.
#3) ostracod
the oscracod is a microscopic crustacean that seems to have a membrane surrounding it. Most importantly, it reminds me of the membrane trees. I think adding football-sized ostracods to the areas with membrane trees would be a nice move. In subnautica, i'd really like to see them blur the line between plant and creature. You approach something and have to ask yourself- is that an animal or a plant or a rock or coral... what is that thing? it looks like they are already are blurring that line with the "spike trap," a planned creature.
#4) map-boarder monsters
I don't know how they plan on establishing the outer boarders of the game, but I think a satisfying answer would be a giant monser. It eats you if you go outside of the boundaries of the game.
If you are interested by the prospect of giant monsters, the following four links are my favorites boarder-patrol candidates:

(I didn't want to fill this post with giant monsters so i'll just say the following)
I think having the monsters be on the edges of the map satisfies the people who want to see giant monsters, but also lets the devs do whatever they want with the story. It also solves the problem of what to do at the boundary of the game in a realistic way PLUS the devs will not be forced to wedge some terrible creature into the central plot if it really doesn't fit.
#5) "ducks"
OK, not just straight up ducks, but some creature that spends times on and around islands (other than those blue crab things) that dives under the water and floats on it- they've already made a cross between the manray and a bird, you could do a cross between a duck and something else. this is a mandarin duck, not photoshop, by the way.
#6) this thing
I'll end this post with my favorite deep-sea small creature, the comb jelly:
I don't want to spam the discussion about these creatures, so I'll bring this up one more time and then stop talking about them. they live deep deep in the sea and are small bioluminescent invertebrates that float around and look beautiful, not all are red, some have tentacles.
what do you think about the categories of camoflauge, reactive, ostracod, boarder monsters, ducks, and comb jellies in the game? do you have another "category" (i.e. symbiotic creatures)?
