Edit: Was originally going to put into general discussion asking why these were removed, but you know what? I'm going to suggest these and other things be added instead.
I was just going through some subnautica videos on youtube, and came across several labeled "Ancient Alien City" intrigued, I watched them. heres 1
Towards the end as he's exploring the old Grand Reef, you come across these structures that look eerily like very old ancient buildings that are overgrown by a thousand years at least. Whether or not the devs at the time planned for them to be an ancient alien race or what not doesn't really matter (though it'd of been awesome to have in the story). Why were these structures removed? They are such an awesome thing to find for players.
The 1 thing I noticed while playing Subnautica is that there are various levels of "discoveries" for the player. There are times when you go "oh that's cool" and keep going, times you stop and look, and times things pull you in and really captivate you. Then there are times you come across something that makes you stop in your tracks, and your draw drops as you go "wait a minute what?"
It's the Jaw dropping ones that the game lacks. The biomes themselves are more "oh this is cool" as you focus on what you came there for, very few times do you ever actually stop and explore something you've seen.
I'd like to suggest to consider adding things like in the video. Ancient Alien structures, bizarre natural things, or stuff you just wouldn't expect to come across. The expression from the guy in the video is what your aiming for. The 'Wiat what? is this.. really?" type of response, as their brain tries to comprehend if it is actually what they think it is.
Idea's:
1) Those Alien structures back.. I havn't seen a video about them since May 2015 so they seem to have been removed from the multiple changes to the biomes and landscapes.
2) Ancient Fossils of fish deep in caves, etc.
3) A cave you go through but as you get deeper the walls begin to look like rib cages, etc. before you realize you're actually in a monstrous skeleton of a fish, who's bones have been petrified, and the silt created a cave out of it against the hillside.
4) In the "Desert" landscape as I call it, a series of sharp pointed rocks in a row, nothing fancy or amazing, and something many players may over look. Though if you dig in the sand around it, you'll uncover the skeleton of another sea creature and you realize the assumed rocks are pieces of its backbone sticking out of the sand.
5) Pieces of metal that are not from your ship, perhaps from another ship long ago, or maybe past civilization? Who knows.
6) Taking a leaf from history, going into a nothing special cave, but in a well hidden back corner of it, have some etches into the rock, nothing special at first again, but upon closer inspection if a player is paying close attention and really having no life in looking at every nook and cranny of every cave, he'll realize it could be writing, hieroglyphics or old drawings/writings on the wall.
7) perhaps even a special event, where if you're in a certain biome at the correct time of night, looking in the correct direction you'll see a meteor break up and a piece of it splash in the water, if you find it under the water, you'll be presented with a glowy, eerie piece of rock. Nothing to it, but could be something to display in your sea base.
Some suggestions and idea's for possible "wtf, oh wow, omg" moments that people aren't expecting that would really blow open the lid for this to be an even more awesome exploration/survival game.
