What if they add turrets that you can build inside and outside your bases to defend you. A really annoying feeling I get is when I've built the base and I then feel pretty much indestructible. There's no dilemma of worrying about what is going to attack or invade my base. Once you've put up your base that's it. No survival element anymore. Something needs to invade your bases and still make you have to worry about surviving on that planet. You should feel like you have to fight something out there that aren't just fish and sharks. That would be a really good reason to add lethal weapons. (Sorry if something like this has been discussed. I'm a bit new here so I'm still trying to see where everyone is at.)
Defensive turrets are a bit too much, the are bearly any threats to your base in the game, the only real threat is yourself when you crush the cyclops with it or you accidentally use the knife inside XD.
I also thought about being safe in my base, but bases can be damaged and destroyed by issues like the hull integrity being breached by construction, for example.
I had a small base to begin with, even made reinforcement panels for it. The hull integrity was about +60. Then I noticed a fissure on one wall precisely next to a reinforcement panel. I had no welder at the time, and my base was utterly lost.
There I was, trying to save some of the materials I had in water proof containers, but it was not enough.
So, I think that the element of risk is always present in the game, as it is. As people have expressed it, in order to survive, apart from everything else, you need some thinking and plans and strategies put in place. This is one of the things I like about the game.
On the issue of guns, like I said before, I am not interested in guns for hunting the local fauna, I'm rather interested in guns for defense of the character in any environment a lifepod lands.
I agree with what you are saying however I still feel a bit empty with the base survival because once you understand the strategy of base building. There isn't any real threat or risk after that. If there was another element that made the survival part more challenging I think it would be a good thing to add. It doesn't have to be too complicated or difficult to solve but having an indestructible base takes a big 'survival' element out of it.
I think there will be: there is a card in the roadmap trello that says: "Creatures attacking your base", it's in Creatures Attack! update for April. So soon enough we may not be safe in our bases anymore.
Take a look at this pic and tell you don't want lethal weapons to defend your self.
Started a new game today and made the radiation suit and welder, so off to the Aurora to fix the leaks and there are sand sharks and Stalker all around me. I went to the opening to get inside and had to abort the mission. To many to count at the entrance.

Been there, done that. A med kit and well aimed shots with a stasis rifle would let you complete the task. So yes, I still say no to lethal weapons, because having them available would mean easy mode. Just slaughter everything around and become the king of the ocean. Where's the fun in that? For me, personally, the huge part of Subnautica's charm is the fact that I'm just a small, mostly helpless, mammal in the underwater jungle full of predators - finding ways to survive and accomplish things without guns is what keeps me playing. It's also what makes this game so unique among all the others.
I haven't seen any fragments, let alone a Stasis rifle. If I had one I would use it(old flashy is always near)
I tried to make the opening with just the knife and its a no go, I died I horrible helpless mammal death.
This is a new start game with the latest changes. This cant be right I Have been in there a million time.
I made it in on a second try, bitten a few times, health down to 8%.
I would think with all the tech we can get and find. That would put us somewhere near the top of the food chain. lol

Dude. If that is true then I really will enjoy this game a lot more.
The only thing is that it doesn't feel right not adding lethal weapons onto this game. It might make the game feel a lot more empty when it's complete if they don't add them. In one way I don't want lethal weapons because I would want to play the game by being strategic and creature-friendly but at the same time I would want that option to be there for the people who choose to fight their way through a situation and so that you feel slightly more secure.
What I would suggest to the dev. if they want to add lethal weapons is that there are heavy consequences to the player by being lethal such as:
-guns require a huge amount of inventory space and ammo is needed
-By killing fish and sharks it could attract more aggressive and dangerous creatures that can stand a much higher chance at killing you even if you had guns.
-making guns and ammo cost a lot of resources
-The guns don't have to be that powerful since your underwater (Normal guns are pretty much useless underwater so you'll have to use electric guns (for example))
These are just examples and i'm not trying to annoy anyone here by saying something like this but I think this game should still have the option. You should be able to complete the game with or without lethal weapons. Having choice and diversity wins the game and the fans in my eyes.

See? You made it. Without guns. You've actually done what you thought impossible, and only on a second try, at that. Surely that's more of an actual accomplishment than simply killing everything around and waltzing in.
Anyway, it's not my place to tell others how to enjoy their game. I've said my piece, shared my personal opinions and views on the subject, and I consider my part in the guns discussion gone. My thanks to those who read through my posts here.
I never said it wasn't impossible.
The game is taking on a whole new level with the update 30365
We will all get good at killing lots of bitters with our knife to get to the fragments now.
What an amazing game, and this forum thread is my first post on the game, hooray for me!
Played solid for 3 days straight now lol, and what an endless experience, it's super: well done UW.
On topic, I don't think guns will help the game. But I have a kind of halfway house proposal. A passive perimeter base deployed item, and a hand held focused energy (gun?) tool that emits a sonic pulse to temporarily freak out / ward off anything in its affecting cone. It can provide that all important base ward, and give the player an energy weapon of sorts that can disperse any nasties taking an omm nom nom interest in the player...
A welcome to all that are new to the game, but the weapons you already have are more than enough.
First you have to gather blueprints for advanced tech and avoid all predators. Fins and the seaglide are your best friends for a while. You'll also want to avoid night divings outside the safe shallows for some time.
Once you've got the upgraded seamoth you can kill every predator except leviathans and shock clean whole areas. The stasis rifle even works against leviathans. And it's only a matter of experience to get around without weapons.
The main reason it works, is the non smart behaviour of all predators in the game. They act only locally and too predictable. No reapers or bonesharks roaming the open sea. Unless the devs rework the creature behaviour and pathfinding you won't need more weapons.
Good weapons for underwater games while still be realistic would be:
Torpedos for subs (only vortex in game)
Sonic pulse or shockwave weapons
Defense mines or drones
Trained fish, like a crash exploding in the face of a reaper
The stasis rifle is a pretty intense piece of technology, so although I agree that the player should have access to some kind of protection early on, I don't think providing a stasis rifle right off the bat is a good solution.
In the past, I've said that flares should have an additional use since they're fairly difficult to get without injuring or killing yourself while baiting Crash fish, and all they do currently is provide light. It would make a lot of sense if they either distracted predators and drew them in, or agitated them to the point of driving them away. Conveniently enough, the game already gives you flares at the start.
I just made a long post on this in the other topic about this subject. We don't have guns because real guns are useless underwater. And specialised underwater firearms are pretty much strictly military and are likely only as good, or worse than the two weapons (stasis-rifle and propulsion cannon) we already have.
Fun fact, we don't have 'lethal' weapons, because doing lethal ranged weapons underwater is VERY hard due to physics. Spearguns have a range of only a few metres, and are more a good fishing tool than a defensive weapon.
Real guns aren't useless underwater, they just lose momentum quickly. A magnum can be lethal for 2 - 3 meters under shallow water. I guess the further down the worse off the bullet will be.

Really looking forward to more updates!

I figured out the reaper was unscanable earlier. But It sometimes does not let you scan stasised fish. For example it didn't let me scan a spade fish.
