Floating islands - crazy theories

There don't seem to be many natural islands on the planet. That one near the reaper leviathan is the only one on our map (I think).
There's the floating island. Plus the underwater islands which look like juvenile floating islands. If the floaters continue to grow then they would eventually rise to the surface. I wonder if they might be integral to the story.
We know we're not the first humans on the planet, especially courtesy of the abandoned bases. Various things and hints from the devs about their story plans suggest there is a planetary intelligence. Maybe it is or at least was happy to accommodate human colonists and started growing the islands for us. Or maybe human scientists started messing with floater DNA and the seafloor in the underwater islands biome to create the islands as a cheaper alternative to mass terraforming. Which the planet didn't like, so it wiped out the humans on the planet and blew a hole in the Aurora.
Those are probably wild stabs in the dark but there's something about those islands....
