Starfish on player bases

I saw that there are pictures of starfish on what looked like player bases posted trello. How do they work? Do they just appear over time? Can they be cleaned off? Or are they something the player can just add for decoration? Personally I do not like the look of them and would not want them on my base. So being optional would be really good.

You are likely looking at the abandoned seabase in the Jelly Shroom Caves or artwork for future abandoned seabases. The Jelly Shroom Caves seabase had a recent revamp on Experimental that has a rusted hull and starfish everywhere. Whether they will actually become a decoration for our seabases is not known. In the future, if you have no power to the base for weeks and never visit, then they might degrade over time to give that look or the result of a destroyed player seabase due to creatures attacking. AFAIK, there is no current plans to add rust or starfish to our bases.

Now there's a neat idea. I could go back to some outpost I made and forgot about ages ago, and see that nature has reclaimed it.

I wouldn't mind being able to apply a few starfishes here and there to my base.

Though I think most lifeforms attaching themselves to human made structures is regarded as a negative. Damage. Impediment to cleaning / repairs. Etc. So maybe our bases, when powered, discourage that.

Player built bases are brand new, I imagine it would take some time for both flora and fauna to treat them as natural parts of the surroundings and try to take over. Honestly, I'd rather not have any on my shiny underwater home's walls.

I like the theory that the base has some sort of low-level fauna deterrent, so long as the base is powered. I mean, there's a type of glass that repels the paint from paint sprayers so long as a current is running through it, so it also helps make sense of why it stays clean.
