Can't Play 1.03

<div class="IPBDescription">Shell.mdl?!</div> Many people have had problems with "<b>Shell.mdl</b>" being inconsistent with new v1.03 servers.

By default, the only copy of shell.mdl is in Half-Life's Pak0.pak. People both with and without the Hi-Def pack have had this problem.

<b>There is one known fix, download the v1.03 version of NS, it's only 2mb, and contains a working shell.mdl, even though it's the exact same file size-wise to the one that comes with Half-Life.</b>

<b>You can get the update <a href='http://mirror2.lanvancouver.com/ns-v103.zip' target='_blank'>here</a>.</b>

Some people have similar problems with other files. I got an error for a sound pack for Half-Life that replaced all movement sounds. Even though it was for plain Half-Life, it still gave me errors. Search for the file in question and see if it exists anywhere on your hard-drive, if it exists OUTSIDE the NS folder, try temporarily re-naming it and see if it fixes your problem.

It's telling me that shell.mdl is wrong. wtf?

1) I have no custom models or sounds.
2) shell.mdl is in valve\pak0.wad, not ns\models, and I don't have a custom replacement for it.
3) The only custom models I have had were valve\models\hgib.mdl and agib.mdl, invisible zero poly gib models. I've been using them for months before NS even came out. Removing them doesn't fix the problem either.

So, WTF is this doing this? I'll try re-installing in a minute.</span><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

There is a problem with the shell, reinstalling should fix it.

    Re-installing NS, or Half-Life?

Shell.mdl is part of HL. What if I install the Hi-Def pack?

Reinstalled NS (had the same problem as Fina), and continue to get the shell.mdl as inconsistent.
  • DalthebDaltheb Join Date: 2002-11-27 Member: 10110Members
I'm also getting the consistency for shell.mdl thing that the others in this post have had.

I just reinstalled NS, and am still getting the same msg when trying to join a 1.03 server.

Anyone know how to fix this?!

go on servers that don't have that checking on. Like my server.
  • FinaFina Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3267Members
I'd do that, but all of my favorite servers have it enabled. I wanna play with my buds again.

Same here. No custom anything for HL itself, only TFC.

I'm going to rip the shell.mdl from another PC in the house, since it can connect just fine. Maybe that will work. If it does, I'll post it here.

I am running a completely clean HL build and I have yet to have this problem.

Have you guys tried totally deleting your HL directory and starting over from scratch?

That's just too much when this shoudln't happen in the first place.

This shell.mdl fixed it for me, but it then gave me errors with custom PLAIN HALF-LIFE mods I had DL'ed. After I made my version of Half-Life lame and unchanged again, it worked.

A good majority of T2 players have had to reinstall Tribes2 every patch for exactly that reason.

    I know. I was playing Tribes 2 non stop until this came out. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Maybe your bud needs to do something to his server... :o

Most admins had to update a few models with the latest patch. If you are still having trouble with certain models just delete them from your NS models directory and connect to any server then the correct models will be downloaded and installed. Problem solved!

Well the attached shell.mdl in this topic didn't work for me.
But me and a mate were smarter and just downloaded the server-side patch it contained a shell.mdl I extracted it to my ns/models dir and now it works <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
So I am saving you guys some trouble and attach a zip with the good shell.mdl here <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I replaced the files and it still doesn't work on forced consistency servers...
  • MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
A bunch of people in IRC have been suggesting it might not like the HL high def pack. Dunno how true that'd be though.
  • Evil_PeteEvil_Pete Join Date: 2002-11-28 Member: 10168Members
I can see why it might have issues with the high definition pack - if the server has the original, low-poly, shell.mdl, but the client has the high definition version, then they'll obviously not match. I'm guessing the NS team didn't bother making a new shell.mdl for the mod - after all, how many different bits of brass can there be <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Bah, I like the high-def pack, but I'll replace it if needed. I'm suprised Flayra or someone hasn't seen this and given us the what for on how to make it work.

Grrr. I just started getting this error. I just installed the 1.03 patch on my client, going to see if that helps.
  • Rictus_GrinRictus_Grin Join Date: 2002-11-28 Member: 10130Members
OK, weird I played ealier no probs now I'm getting same error. This doesn't have anything to do with RCbot does it???
  • PJJPJJ Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9579Members
Installing the 1.03 patch fixed this problem for me. I would recomend everyone does it.

I've updated the first post of this topic with everything on the topic, including a fix. Maybe if a moderator could rename this topic to "Problems with "shell.mdl" and pin it.... pretty please? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

There is a second known fix. Rename your pak1.pak file to pak1.old or something and NS returns to using your original Half-Life shell.mdl which is infact lower poly than the pak1.pak shell.mdl. Now you can play on those servers. The reason installing the NS 1.03 patch works is because the old halflife shell.mdl was included in the ns/models folder i'm guessing, so it fixes your problem as well.

Can you tell me how to turn off the consistency checking on my server? Running NS 1.03 and ClanMod.

Also, anyone know exactly what the mp_trainingmode variable does?

    Thanks!
