Models for inclusion in maps

It's the little details....
Ok, just thought of this (been really creative lately):

Would it be possible to do models of everyday objects such as a watch, a tipped over cup, empty boots, and the like into maps using models? Since I've heard so much about how models don't wreak havoc on r_speeds as much as stuff made in 'The Hammer' (*shudder*), I thought someone would be able to make some pretty decent looking things that mappers could add to maps.

So... like... what all would we need? And who could do this?

Watch
Handheld computer
Cup tipped over
Cup tipped over with drink spilled out
Cup tipped over with drink spilled out and running off of a straight edge (basically make a 'cut' in the spill, and the mapper would add particles dripping down)
Left boot
Right boot
Chewed up left boot
Chewed up right boot
A toolbox

What else?

Great idea, Molec, if someone gave me 3DSM and 32 hours per day I'd be happy to make those models.

    Further possibilities would be:

    -playing cards
-flowers (although they'd have to be put in low traffic areas)
-dishes (with and without food, broken and intact...)
-clothing (I'm sick of func_illusionary cloth)

Can models move? If so, a bit of flapping fabric, torn off when it was caught on a sharp edge of something as the person was being dragged by an alien.

I love blasting those suckers with a AUG.

    Anyways, what about...
    a small cleaning bot (on/misfunctioning/off)
    papers that float around
    empty clips of ammo
    T.V.

    Hm....

If anyone needs 3DSM I can send you it...I don't use it.

Why the heck did they rename it "The Hammer" anyways???
    *sorry if offtopic*

But i really think that models for inclusion in maps would be a really good idea too. Especially for some small arrays of pipes or radiators or something, giving some areas hight detail without making the geometry in 'the program formerly known as Worldcraft'.

I would try to make some but 3dmax4 does not work with windows XP.

Can somoene give me the c-dilla update in maybe an .exe format?

I think its a very good idea in making those small models... they dont need that much of a detail, its just that they're there.
About the playing cards what Nemisis Zero mentioned... i think those could be easily done with a texture or decal, since they're almost flat

Thuis is a really good idea. The trash in NS _NEXT added so much to the atmosphere.

I think we sould need more sci-fi things like space suits, air cylinders, electronic components...

Ill make some simple models if you guys come up with a list of things your wanting.
Ill start on some of the stuff youve already mentioned soon (not to sure about the dishes, clothes, flowers idea tho, there not very spacey if you know what i mean)

im glad you mentioned this mole. in the past, if i need to do something super-complicated, i make it into a model... however, i suck at making models, and thus i rarely use them. a great big pack of random models would be wonderful! they can be more highly detailed and they can move, making for much more fun in a map.

I'd love to do some modelling for you guys if you want. You'd have to bear with me while I reinstall 3dsmax and milkshape...but yeah!

Future model sets to use in NS are a large possibility. What I'D like to see are:

    Dropships
    Machinery, eg, forklift
    Pipe sets
Holographic signs (Relic's got this covered)
    Chairs, desks, etc
Vent covers/rims (I need this for Hera actually - a lot of my vent openings are rather bare and I can't spare the planes to make them look better)
    Alien constructions

    etc. etc.

That was my idea behind them - just because it's space, humans won't stop living. Think about Ripleys cat, for example.

BTW, good point about the cards, now all I need is someone whose 2D skills don't suck as much as mine

True! On the other hand, you don't expect to see a pelagonia at loadingbay in a spacecraft. But around lockers and bedrooms and toilets and diningrooms and such, i think it's VERY important to have this kind of stuff.

My NS map (when I get around to doing it) is probably gonna be some kind of underwater laboratory that's been partially flooded. I've been thinking of having some of the lab equipment just floating in the flooded areas. So maybe some sort of techy-looking lab equipment, like a small mainframe, a monitor, a glass beaker, etc. would be a good idea for a model of this sort.

    Everyday objects,
CDs, bottles, empty weapons, cans, books, and if books are too primative then how about data pads. Tins of paint... Fire extinguishers... kitchen appliances...

You guys should really look though the HL models, some of these requested models are already in there...

If someone could model this, I could really use it! It should be really low-poly, since it's so simple. It's a worklight stand, but I'd like the actual light to be left off. It's easier to set the right angle of the light if I use a brush for it. I'd build the whole thing out of brushes, but I'd like to use it in several places in ns_bast, and I can't afford the planes.

Oh, and it should be taller (1.5 times?) the height of a marine, and it would really help if the origin were centered where the base would meet the floor.

relic, if I make you the model, can you turn it into a mdl... I mean, if I can give you a 3ds model...can you do the rest?

I don't have 3dsMax, unfortunately. I have a copy of Milkshape, but the registration went haywire after the time change for some reason, so now I can't save. :/

That would be a good model, you could mount all kinds of sci-fi stuff on that.

I could use some of those portable lights myself, since my map is set in a mine.

At last something i can do !
I r a modeller and i could make that and convert it into .mdl for you to use in your maps. If you already have a skin then can you mail it to me @ Stepisgreat@hotmail.com
If you dont then just mail me a request and i'll get right on it .

Should we be worring about eating up texture memory with the skins for all these models? Bearing in mind their is going to be loads of models that will be used by NS already.
  • Relic25Relic25 Pixel Punk Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 39Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Maybe if people went over the top with them it would be a problem, but for the one model I'm describing, 1 very small texture (some kind of medium grey metallic texture) would be all that's needed.
