Most likely a new form of transportation, like a glider, or because of space things and alien planet things you could swim up a waterfall due to some sort of alien physics. Or what I really want a sort of flying reefback or large creature that surfaces and flies during day, and swims at nigh (is friendly) and you can jump on its back to reach said islands.
