For anyone trying out the nomad life challenge, you *can* cook fish without using a high tech tool.
Capture live fish and put them into your inventory, then swim over to a Thermal Vent and work your way down to one of the little side caves in the vent wall, near the bottom. Don't get caught in the eruptions and burned. Time the eruptions and release the fish just before the eruption occurs. They will swim out into the central shaft of the vent, and then be killed/cooked instantly when it erupts. They will float downward after this happens, so just grab them between eruptions. I cooked a couple of Peepers, a Garryfish and an Airsack today, just to test it.
