Resources respawn only when you explore somewhere else

While it may not be realistic, for the purposes of survival gameplay it would make an awful lot of sense for Subnautica's resources to respawn (especially since they vanish on death.) They're called resources, after all.
However, the game relies heavily on encouraging if not forcing the player to move around the entire map to find resources and salvage new technologies, and this might be undermined by a static respawn rate.
For this reason, I think it would make the most sense for resources to respawn based on exploration:
Thus, players will find resources respawning faster if they're constantly moving to new areas.
However, the game relies heavily on encouraging if not forcing the player to move around the entire map to find resources and salvage new technologies, and this might be undermined by a static respawn rate.
For this reason, I think it would make the most sense for resources to respawn based on exploration:
- The game keeps track of every single resource node - specifically, which biome it belongs to and which material it is.
- Upon gathering a resource node, it's given a slightly-randomized cooldown (to throw out a number, the value is 1000-3000.)
- The cooldown does not go down with time; instead it reduces by 1 for every 5m a player moves while in any other biome.
- Upon the cooldown reaching 0, the material respawns somewhere or another in the biome.
- On death, if any of the player's lost items were a harvested material, the cooldowns for a randomly selected equal number of that material are reduced by 33% of their original value.
Thus, players will find resources respawning faster if they're constantly moving to new areas.
