Non Lethal Weapons, Like Cattle Prods.

I want to see something similar to a cattle prod in game, like something that can ward off predators just by prodding them.

It would most likely also be used for catching smaller fish that are edible. But it can also be used to ward off larger animals like perhaps a sandshark. Just a suggestion.

The first thing I think of is the Stun Sticks from Half-Life 2, and honestly, I think it would be great!
Combine a battery with some titanium, and maybe a couple other simple ingredients and voila! A low-range alternative to the Stasis Rifle for early-game players! Would also be very useful for catching fast fish like Peepers.

Maybe it could be a quick-striking sort of thing, that quickly telescopes outward to strike a creature at just slightly more range than you can hit them with a knife. Or just a simple melee weapon would be perfect!

Sorry to encroach a bit of your idea, but damn, that's a quality idea right there. I suddenly NEED it!

I'm not so sure that's a good idea. You're in a saltwater environment. It would seriously harm you. It's different when you use the Seamoth defense system because you're contained. Maybe add an attachment to the Exosuit?

I mean, there are also several exposed electrical wires in Aurora wrecks that have arcing electricity, and it doesn't harm you unless you touch the electricity itself.
Also, I suppose it wouldn't necessarily need to be electricity. There are infinite possibilities in a high-tech sci-fi world!

This "stun stick" you're talking about actually exists.

This is a prod which is used to repel sharks while diving. The end is slightly electric, though just enough to shock the shark only when it touches it. If a shark gets too curious towards a diver, the diver simply has to gently poke it with the end of the prod.

But he has a valid point there which I also would have brought up if it hasn't already. Because any kind of energy in Sci-Fi themed games usually is used in one scene or the other where it comes into contact with water end "shocks" anyone/-thing that comes in contact with it. Handling it differently in Subnautica with things already in the game like the Ampeel and the PD-System of the Seamoth would be kinda wrong. Why should one hand held gadget handle energy in a different way then the other things that use similar mehtods in the game?

Instead of a shock stick I would suggest using something similar to the shark-repell systems that you can buy as a diver today. It emits an electromagnetic field around the diver which confuses the shark's sense for those fields by which they can sense heart beats or muscle contractions up close. It confuses them so much when they get close, that they turn around and swim away. Since we do not have an electical sense I can only imagine that it must feel like a really strong tingling on your skin or something alike which irrritates you so much that you just want to get away from that sensation.

Such a device would normally be omnidirectional but maybe you could just put the emitter of that field at the end of a "stick" to make it slightly more directional?

If electricity is an issue then just use heat. Make it like a branding iron. Keep all the electric parts internal.
