I'm having a heated argument with my friend here, I'm hoping you guys can help me resolve this.
We've established that the game was launched on Oct 31st 2012. But what date was it playable on steam? And when did it transition between alpha and beta?

The very first public edition of NS2 was the engine test released to special edition pre-orderers in (april 2010?). Here's a video of the super not buggy at all engine test:
The game became available to pre-order in late may (?) 2009 IIRC. Here was the pre-order video:

Watching old videos and trailers etc makes me want to play NS2... then I log in and remember the map layouts aren't the same, the graphics and audio are totally different, lifeforms behave totally differently, biomass is a thing and it makes me not want to play anymore.
its really strange to miss a game that you can still technically play
@aeroripper Whaaaa you could play as a skulk in the engine test?? I only ever could shoot the wooden targets as a marine at a whopping 5 fps.
There were a few mods floating around during the engine test (or was it the alpha by then?). I can't remember. I do remember the wooden targets though in the first public build.
@IronHorse so, when the engine test came out we had small parts of ns2_rockdown and ns2_junction to run around in. We could not shoot or bite, so someone came up with a shoot and bite mod (+wallwalking mod lateron)
Skulks vs Rifle marines in a very fun yet insane lagfest of "where's my FPS" "hitreg, what's that?" basically

If that does not match your experience, feel free to use the hitreg tool yourself. It is easy to use.
