1gb save files

Seriously. Was manually cleaning out old save games (because they do not get deleted from the game directory even when you tell it to do so in the game menu) and was quite aghast that every one of them was taking up an average of an entire gigabyte of space per save game.

I daresay some optimization is in order.

Consider yourself lucky. I have one that is 2.2 GB in size and it appears to be corrupted as it won't load up, just endless tells me it's loading. Had to start a new game :disappointed:

It's crazy. I find the average Crusader Kings 2 save file is less than 5mb, and if you've played that game you know there's obnoxious amounts of data involved.

This is a long known issue. SN is currently saving the entire (explored) area to save file - every single bit of terrain and objects. This of course makes no sense. UWE has said they intend to completely remove the ability to deform terrain. Once this is done, the save files will be in the tens of KB at most, since terrain data will not need to be persisted. (There are other ways to solve the problem, but this is the simplest from the development perspective).
