If you're thinking about making new areas where the terrain is different, I think an Arctic Ocean either North or South of the crash site would be really beautiful and fun to explore.
Extreme climate differences within a few kilometers are a bit harsh. So unless you have some alien tech creating that arctic area and have a reason to explore exactly that tech for story reasons, it makes little sense to add such a biome just for looks.
The ocean actually goes on for quite some time though just going in one direction. Maybe if you had to spend a good 10-15 minutes going North or South in order to get there to make it more realistic. I don't know man, but I've have always found ice areas in underwater games extremely intriguing and beautiful. A varied environment also keeps people from getting bored and keeps them interested in continuing to play.
A large barge with a couple moonpool-type docks and a Cyclops dock. Resources, a few MFRs to build stuff in. Then you select a new area to go visit, and the game loads a new map and puts the barge and your docked stuff in the center.
