Death save

Is subnautica saving the game when you die or exit? I have (had) a load from before a drowning death in case a thing I tried did't work. When it didn't work, I exited to menu and loaded the saved game (which the screenshot seems to look like my save). Instead, I load in and die immediately.

I've only ever known it to save when you explicitly tell it to. I'd take a look at what killed you on load-in, though. Probably shouldn't be doing that...

Hard to tell because it would load and immediately go to the "you died" sound and poof, I'm in the shallows.

Could be a loading delay issue. Especially if you load a game after exiting to menu, your game gets loaded faster than you can see it (or interact with it). During the delay, you can drown or be attacked by aggressive lifeforms. Does this sound like a possibility?

Nope. I saved with full air inside the seamoth. I know that when you reload you are placed outside vehicles now. Unfortunately I've moved on and can't repeat it without intentionally trying.

That is the equivalent of being outside the Seamoth when you save. In fact, I've gotten a death by reload myself once for that exact reason: I drowned because I spawned outside my seamoth and the delay between the save file activating and me being able to play was too long. I never even got to see anything, going straight from load-up to Black Screen of Death.

Even if it's no longer of immediate use, if something like this happens again, you could try reloading. The delay's length isn't set in stone and you might get one that doesn't get you killed. But overall, just avoid saving in a vehicle until UWE gets this fixed.
