Feedback on Scanner Room

Subnautica is a big place. I've built up a map in my head over the 26 hours I've been playing but it's still quite easy to not be sure when anything is. Without referring to a map on the Wiki I'd have a much worse idea of where the biomes were located. Finding wrecks has been even more haphazard, lifepod signals give you a guide to some wrecks but there are a lot of wrecks and fragments out there to search for. Then there is remembering which biomes resources are located in.
What I had expected was for my scanner room to let me have an ingame map reference. The scanner is actually a drone control room. The camera drones, local map and scanning aren't bad ideas but as it is they provide nothing of use to me. On Trello they plan to increase the range and add beacons but it leaves it fundamentally flawed. Why go to the trouble of building a scanner room and powering it within range of the biome you want to explore, then taking the time to drive around a camera when you could just hop in your seamoth and actually gather resources? Even with ten times the ranges, a 5000M drone range and a 1000M map I still wouldn't use it.
From a quick test with the camera drone the map only covers 100M, you can see further than that standing on top of the room. This leaves the scan for resources or wrecks function pointless. Maybe I missed some way to center the map on a drone.
The current room would be a perfect fit for the Cyclops rather than a base as it's main shortcomings are limited visibility, size and speed. If you have a Seamoth in it then that is less of an issue but with the slower PRAWN the current scanner room drones and scan ability would be very useful.
The scanner room itself would function as a complete map that would track all explored terrain and information on the biome. Using that little joystick on the map table you'd be able to scroll and zoom, getting a good idea of where you wanted to go and being able to place a marker that would show on your hud.
