    It really isn't. Sure there are gonna be outliers - people at the extremes that want to mine everything and stuff it in boxes or don't want to be bothered to do anything. But consider this - it takes about 30 minutes of real time to run out of water. I can catch enough bladderfish to make 5 filtered water and fabricate them in about a minute. I can sweep all the limestone off one of those giant coral tubes in maybe 4 or 5 minutes, depending how many times I need to surface, finding more than enough copper in the process. That means I can spend (let's round up a bit here) 10 minutes gathering resources and then go do whatever for an hour. If you think 1/6 of your time is too much gathering for a survival game, then @Ralij is right - time to find a new genre.
