Remember the deleting cache folders trick? Well, watch this -- we've been doing it incompletely.

So you're going to want to make note of which camera batch files you've got modified terrain on, and delete every file in both cache directories AND THE MAIN SAVE FOLDER besides the files that have modified data (so look through all of your bases with the F1 window open). EDIT: and of course don't delete the four main save game files which are:
  • gameinfo.json
  • global-objects.bin
  • scene-objects.bin
  • screenshot.jpg (<- that's the little thumbnail showing you a preview of the save when you go to load)

Watch IGP explain below:

I also made a thread about this over in Bug Reporting here

I almost feel like giving up on this game with performance as bad as it is. I was so excited that those tricks could fix things, but it ruins the entire story/resource scarcity part of the game.

Well, it's still in Alpha. Things like this are to be expected. I've stopped playing it for now (mostly because there are other games I want to play). I'll start playing again when there are more updates or we reach version 1. :)

People always seem to lose sight of that. Probably cause most of the game is so good. :)

Give them some time. Up until now, the game's been quite stable and didn't have nearly as bad FPS issues. Best course of action would to be to just set it aside until it's fixed, rather than give up on it for good.

I *strongly* doubt it'll be one of those EA games that gets into a broken state and then never ever leaves it. :)

Apparently the problem resides in the Seamoth's inventory space and duplicated wrecks! You don't see it happening but if there's anything in the Seamoth's storage, it's being duplicated over and over in the source code - but you don't see it physically happen. There's a wreck in one of the grassy plateaus which just kills the game, it takes ages for the wreck to spawn in and - when it does - the game crashes! I think these are the two biggest problems at the minute, and the developers seem to be working on it right now.
