Sea treaders are more mobile and slightly smaller, making plant colonization a bit harder (I would imagine). Also, they're herbivores aren't they? So, if any plant fell off it would just be eaten. Maybe they practice some form of grooming as well, where other members of their herd eat plants that manage to grow on their backs.
