Damaged save file?

After finally getting a PRAWN, I saved the game and closed it out. Now I come back and it says Damaged Save File, it never would load, exceeding 500 seconds load time. If my game is dead, I really hope there's a way to take all the progress and put it on another save file, because I could in no way get all those probably 15 blueprints I didn't finish back, and my prawn, and my seamoth, exploration of all the aurora, and lots of progress.

Run a chkdsk on the drive.

If that doesn't work, as a last try, clear the cache on that save (see my sig down there ▼ , but clear the entire thing except for the four main files, don't try to leave out the base batches).

I don't get how the cache clearing works? I don't really see where to start.

Alright so I did a disk check, nothing happened. I let it load for 1200 seconds, it never gets past Loading World Tiles. Now I just need a better explanation on cache clearing.

Okay, so I watched the video provided in the cache clearing tutorial. But how in the world do I get my batch numbers if I can't load the world?

//EDIT: I cleared every cache file, guess that's not wanted, because it also just cleared my base, seamoth, all my items, ect ect... basically a full on reset. Luckily I made a backup. So I'm stumped here.

Clearing cache doesn't affect player, vehiecles or bases. Those are not saved in cache files. Cache files are responsible for terrain, geometry and resources.

You can delete everything in your save folder except for gameinfo.json(purely visual indicators for base, cyclops and seamoth then gameversion, playtime, pc_name, steam name and build and game version and gamemode), global-objects.bin(most of relevant information about bases, vehiecles and the like) and scene-objects.bin(other part of storage and player relevant data like pda entries, blueprints, worldstate etc) and a screenshot.jpg(thumbnain for the save)

From person experience in messing around with saves, if there is an error in global-objects.bin you will see an error during loading screen where it says loading ###, errors in scene-objects.bin will simply reset player and ONLY player your base will still be there and so will your vehicles. Now bad edits to cashe/batch files do in fact result in infinite loading.

Someone was asking about something and I made a short write-up about save files - http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/comment/2322024/#Comment_2322024

Bummer. I remember first day I got this last year I put 10 hours in 1 sitting and game crashed without any saves. Guess its my fault but man I took a long break from the game after that. lol Now I save a lot but I guess that makes the game laggy and crash all the more now. Looking forward to the next update sometime in January.

Yes, but you could try copying another gameinfo.json from another save.

I would start the game in creative mode, make it as similar as possible to your other save with console commands, then switch game modes to whatever your lost save was with the console, then try copying files over. Messy, but you've nothing to lose.

    What he said ^
Just start a save on same game mode, save and exit. All you need is a generic file it has no impact what so ever on what is inside the save file it just holds gameversion pc_name, steam name and the rest are just displayed things on the save like whether you have seamoth and so on. Kind of odd that game can recover from having damaged important save file but not that? Dono tho never tried to load with damaged gameinfo.json, since you said you had infinite loading I'd say it was because one of cashe files, damaged ones made my loading infinite.

Yes, I could do that, but I've decided to make a new save and try another go. I can't get all those blueprints back, I'd be confused also because all the landscape would be changed. It'd be just too different.

For later I would highly recommend periodically clearing cache and build your base in a way that doesn't change terrain so you can clear and not have anything clipping in. You may go for 40 hours before save starts acting up, my more recent save went for a LONG time before performance started going down the toilet it was almost 3 gigs. But my very first save didn't even make it to 20 hours before it started crashing(after first crash I couldn't even go 5 minutes before it would crash again) and wasn't even 2 gigs. It's random.

In my case, cleaning save solves all the problems and a save I personally butchered by chopping bits and pieces out lasted for over 40 hours and still worked fine.
