So, are we still required to start a new game after each update these days? (I'm assuming the terrain update will need one, but...)

Nobody requires you to do anything. You can use old saves on new updates, but you'll get an advice note pop up if you try to load an old save in a new update if UWE consider it to be advantageous. Just try to load an old save and see what happens.

Skope

Unless you built a base, or something of yours is in a part of the map that was updated (for example, building your base in the Lost River area before the Bones update will most likely get rid of your base) there's really nothing to worry about when updating.
