<div class="IPBDescription">mine do, most of the time</div> i feel that the commanders most important job is to talk to his marines and to speak with respect and confidence
when i start a new game i always ask politely to be commander
then i talk to them constantly. "nice rush guys stick tight i almost got tf up"
i'm still a new commander, so i am still getting the hang of things.
i will say, often "sorry i'm kinda slow guys, you guys are doing incredible, just survive a little longer and i'll have presents for everyone"
things like that, imo, give the marines incredible confidence and make them want to listen to you.

i swear dropping medpaks is a game unto itself. the challenge of clicking your marines and dropping that medpak at the right spot is sometimes the difference between getting that siege cannon up and losing the game. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
it keeps them from whining too much when they realize if they need health they get it
Act less like a faggot and more like a commander <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Oh, and what can I do for you mr. I refuse to listen to orders? Oh, you want a HMG, just let me upgrade even though I have only one resource node, I'm so weak, so I listen to you. Oh, you want me to fondle your balls to? Sure, just give me a second.
You liked that didn't you, now let me get that upgrade, and I hope you will listen to orders now, sire, lord, my king!

Seriously, I would never try to butter my players by acting "nice" I say them what I think of their *tactics* when they don't listen to my orders, and tell them NOT to act like idiots when they to. They usually listen and the only people who ever got problems with my orders, are complete newbies. But eventually they learn.
I might not be the NICEST commander, but I almost ALWAYS get the job done. I'm one mean fighting machine
-if your a noob but dont BS me I wont scream @ u
-if your a noob and BS me you'll end up with a turret on you
-if your good and you BS me you wont get presents
-if your good and dont BS me then i'll get the first hmg and ha <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
-respect me and i'll respect you <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
me "okay, we got everything our base needs, now go to this hive and secure it whilst i send the other part of the team to get some nodes"
3/4 of the team "can i have HA/HMG?"/"can i have shotty?"
me "sorry, we don't have those researched yet"/"sorry, not enough resources, you can do without, just trust your teamates"
first group i send to hive "k were here. oh no i heard a squishy sound, im going to run under here/over to that node across the map"
second group i sent to secure vital nodes that connect to the rest of the map "RES TOWER NOW! WE GOTTA HURRY!"
me "first i'll plop down a turret factory so we can actually defend ourselves"
team "im tired of waiting, i'm gonna go solo and kill that hive"
skulks "yay! thanksgiving!"
the rest of the match is basically random gunfire of wayward marines as skulks chomp them down.
then i am swiftly ejected because nobody sat their a** down to build the turret factory or phase gate, and just went soloing without my consent.people just don't have the common sense to go to their waypoints and STAY there. if i am in the role of commander you guys had better learn that i am god and if you don't follow my word you will end up dead. i give you health when i see you need it, i give you defense and weapons when we need them. i will upgrade and research when i think it's necessary to up the anty. do not kick me because you trailed off and didn't see the skulk above your head. [/whine]
positive reinforcement builds confidence and builds loyalty to the commander
if you tell a group of marines that they did a great job holding an outpost, and then give them health + ammo + spare guns and such, they will continue to do so.
the second part of this is ignoring people who ignore you. if they run off, ignore buildings i tell them to build, and basically refuse to follow orders, i ignore them until they start helping the team again.
what happens is soon you have marines who wish to stay alive, and realizing that the best way to do that is to follow orders. i also tell my marines what i am doing. "guys sit tight, when i tell you move to wp. its an empty hive but I NEED YOU ALIVE so be careful...we're going to fortify and then move out again etc etc etc."
smart marines will then realize that the commander has a plan, good or bad. even good marines, if they think a commander is bad, willl try to take the situation into his own hands on the ground, if they think the commander has no idea what he's doing
What I learned that game was a commander is one to be respected as it is a HARD thing to do. Especially if you have too many people running around with no real order.
This is what I did to make it easier.
1. assign or pick in your heads who you want to be captains, give them priority, (this works best if you are playing with regs) that round I have 3 guys who got all my attention, one guy went to the right to a hive and anything in between and the other 2 went left and then split off again, giving them anything they asked for (within reason) made all the noobs and stragglers want to stick with them because the rain of guns and health was around them, also I trusted them to tell me what was going on in the field, if they said attack here I did and 7 out of 10 times it was a success.
2. Use phase gates but don?t use allot of them! To many phase gates will confuse and slow down your units, 3 or 4 in the whole map will make it quick to move around without getting confused.
3. USE VOICECOM! A commander cant read the text very well and has to stop what he is doing to read it and reply back, with voice I can give commands and politely tell you waiting for 22 resources then I'm dropping a resource turret there were you are, or sorry, no money for guns go fight here and I will let you know when we got em.
4. If you have allot of people yelling around on voice mute all of them except for the ones that you have as captains. It?s to hard to be captain already without trying to listed to 10 guys yelling into there mics.
I have made it a point not to use my mic unless the comm. needs to know something now after playing COMM.
That?s all I can think of right now <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
GG commanders! Go alien...
Oh yea!: this was my second time playing on a pub server with the command. Rather than jumping into a chair for the first time on a pub server download the bots and play commander with them! You will learn the command console and when you do play on pub it will be easier and more fun for you and the others on the server.
We have 1 hive secured and are attempting to siege hive 2.
I have 3 ha + welder and 1 non-ha + welder sitting outside....
I build tf and 2 turrets and upgrade tf for siege...
I say "Allright guys... stay there outsided hive.. building siege in a moment"
First marine decides that he is invincible and runs out into a hail of turret fire and dies...
Second 2 marines follow suit..... and die
Last guy then runs away.. and gets skulked in the back.
All the while I'm spamming health and saying get back to the tf.
Aliens eat up:
25 rez for tf
28 rez for 2 turrets
25 rez for tf upgrade
on top of that we lose:
3 ha upgrades at what is it? 25?
3 hmgs at 25
4 welders at 10 a piece
and probably 30 in health packs
so... 30 seconds of stupidity = about 300 lost rez
I think if marines actually realized how much they cost when they die... they would be less willing to go kamikaze. It is a fine line however.. a lot of the time.. marines will just mill around the base waiting for upgrades... ignoring your pleas to move to the waypoint...
(This happens all the time: I'll say... "you guys have full ammo and armor upgrades, and Im saving for tf+siege, just go to the waypoint as a team and you will be fine" and like 1 guy will go to the wp and get worked... while the rest of the team wanders off seperatlely or mills around base, then someone else decides to go to wp alone, and dies, and over and over"
I dunno.. a lot of you will probably say I just need to hold my marines hands a little more... but the thing is... it gets pretty hard to set waypoints, drop health, drop guns, research things, build structures, and then follow your idiot marines around walking them to way-points.
Hehe.. I'm probably just bitter after losing my last match <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
