I love subnautica and it has been great to see it grow for myself, but please just fix the game. At first when I got the game everything worked well, but then the game was stuck loading. Took me a while then fixed that, then now the game says it is missing files, which I did not touch or delete at all. So in conclusion, my game says a file named '2013' is not accessible and uninstalling and reinstalling creates the same problem. Pls help

Very old savegames could well be unusable. While few and far between, there have been updates that have rendered old savegames unusable. You could try clearing your cache files, but it's probably for the best to just start a fresh game.

@0x6A7232, would you care to chime in with your troubleshooting genius?

If uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help, run a chkdsk on the drive you're installing to. There's a line in my signature below if you need help doing that. Then either uninstall / reinstall again, or you could verify the local game files through Steam.

If you're still having the problem after doing that, can you provide the exact error text, as well as your output_log.txt, located in Subnauitca\Subnauitca_Data, as well as any folders that begin with a numerical date, and your dxdiag output (run dxdiag, select 'save all information') ?

EDIT: Oh, and is this with a fresh save, an old save, or both?

Error Message: "An error occured while updating Subnautica (content file locked) : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapp\common\Subnautica\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2013\installscript.vdf

I did the chkdsk check, and no errors were found.
-I have already verified the files multiple times.

Im not sure what you mean when you ask for fresh save, old save, or both, because I had started a new world a week ago but then subnautica wouldn't launch so now I can't get into the game.

Find that file, right-click, and select properties. The second tab is security. Click each user/group from the top box, and check whether they have permissions for "Full control" "Modify" "Read & execute" "read" and "write". (special permissions is unchecked on my system)

Umm. Almost seems like the file is in use. You tried restarting, right? As Windows 10 doesn't do a full shut down when you shut it down, it just logs you off, and hibernates the kernel (aka "Fast Boot"). So sometimes you have to click "restart" to get it to actually, well, restart the whole OS (though normally it prompts you to do this when necessary, I'm sure exceptions happen from time to time).

To clarify a bit, that file is the install script for (IIRC) Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable 2013, which is a prerequisite for running Subnautica. I'm guessing after the update it gets run to verify that MS V C++ 2k13 is installed. Reason I think it's already open for some reason is, usually if it's a permissions issue (like @narfblat was guessing), it will say "access denied", not "file locked" - file lock normally happens when a file is open / running.

Restarting should fix this, AFAIK, although there's one thing -- what virus scanner are you using? (if you aren't using a third part one, like BitDefender, Avast, Norton or McAfee, then you are using the built in MS Security Essentials virus scanner, FYI).
