For the Devs - What was your motivation for starting to create Subnautica?

This has intrigued me for quite some time.
Devs, why did you decided to create Subnautica? I mean, could have developed any other project, but why this one? Were there changes to the world since the original concept, or did you manage to stick with your idea during the course of development?
Besides actual fauna and flora, in what else you used as a base to create the world? I know the influence of Natural Selection, but were there any books or movies that gave you guys the idea? For example, Kevin Levine, duringthe interview available on the Bioshock Remastered, said at the time, after System Shock 2 didn't performed well enough, he had this idea for Bioshock starting when he read Ayn Rand's books.

Funny, but probably pretty close to what actually happened...
Somebody at some point said... "Let's make a Ocean Survival Game" ... and They did.
NS 2: Mulitplayer FPS with aliens
Subnautica: "If I hear the words GUNS or MULTIPLAYER one more time I'm FINISHED"
If anyone doesn't have it, they should snag it. it's pretty cool!
Need to buy a lot more games so I can catch up with a friend who has like 175 in his library.
I don't know, it sounded like Future Perfect to me.
Cory (@Squeal_Like_A_Pig) kept taking sea creatures and a Hugh he found on the beaches of San Francisco into the office, so my guess is. He is one of the main protagonists in this story...
