I'm going to start making maps for NS as soon as I figure out to. I've got everything set up, now I'm lost. I want to know if anyone could post up a map that I could open in hammer so I see how the map is supposed to look and all.
Just tell us what you need to know. Things just kind of come up as you go and when they arrive, the forums will be here. Just look at what other people do well/badly and develop your own ideas.
To tell you the truth.. ns mapping might be quite intimidating for new mappers... search for some websites and do some tutorials before starting your first map.
Or do what I did and make your own mod.... took me like a week.... and looking back its no where near where i am today... but it was such a learning experiance
id start with CS or HLDM mapping first. NS maps have a large design standpoint to live up to. id start with some simpler maps for different mods, then when you get up on VHE, come on over to NS. Just my 2 cents.
Although NS is harder to map for than, say HLDM, I feel I'm actually learning a lot more through the " in at the deep end " approach...
Just read all the tutorials you can find and play around with it. It's only a big , complex, digital lego set...
If you have specific worldcraft / hammer questions, VERC forums ( link in the map FAQ ) know everything, although they will be more helpful if you at least TRY and search for the answer first..
eg, my first thread there, I'd actually sussed out what I had to do to solve a problem, but missed out a space in a command line, so it didn't work..
The kind of thing a noob could struggle with for days or weeks will frequently be soooooo obvious to a more experienced mapper...and most of them are quite happy to point you in the right direction as long as the question isn't , like, "World Class" stupid..
I found this tutorial to be a huge help in getting me rolling again. It assumes you know nothing about the Hammer editor (which is good for a tutorial to assume), and takes you through making a few rooms and attaching a hallway, then messing with textures and entities, and so on. It's basically just enough to get your feet wet, but provides necessary beginner's skills that you can begin adding to through experience. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
The tutorial has Quake mapping in mind, but both games use the same Hammer editor.
