Ok, so I was reading this book called Atlas Obscua (great book, check it out), that is about little known destinations for travel. I was reading the pages for Mexico, and I saw this:

Oh yeah, and about the bones? The pit was used as an area to dump corpses after human sacrifices.

Here's an article they did on other brine features, as well as their online writeup of the Angelita Cenote, Kingkuma's location.

But I don't see why the brine pools in the gulf of mexico couldn't have been an inspiration, cause they have dead crabs which could've inspired the skeletons:
