Smaller Subs having their own oxygen supply? Idea or Trash

So hear me out,
when I'm playing the game I've been thinking to myself 'oxygen just seems to grow on trees here for these things to have infinite, what if they had a certain amount ( a helluva lot more than the player) that needed to be connected to a moonpool, surface pump, cyclops, etc'.

So, what if there was a new kind of base/surface pump that attached to a submarine and filled it with a tasty fresh load of filtered oxygen? maybe they could have an oxygen generator that makes oxygen but drains power faster? maybe there could be an item the player can carry to give the sub some of its oxygen back in case of emergencies (needing a new machine to compress the air of course) tell me what you think, maybe the idea can be improved upon.

in my opinion (in this case) gameplay < realism

Modern subs make their own O2 by separating it from the seawater.

but could a small one like the sea moth be big enough to separate O2?

We are 400 years into the future, but and that's a big BUT... We're also driving early 20th century subs around if you go by specs and some capabilities (gameplay related nerfs of course :D)

Obviously it can. If I remember correctly, it's done using electrolysis (so you also get H2), which requires electricity. And guess what happens when your base/moth/cyclops/PRAWN runs out of power? "Emergency power only. Oxygen production offline"

Yeah I guess your right, though limited oxygen for them in hardcore mode would be appropriate
    (difficulty > realism)

OR what if you had to (in hardcore) make the oxygen production machine that drew a bit of power from your system?

Iirc your sub should very slowly use up energy when you just "sit" in it. I am not sure though. Maybe they should just add a small energy usage whenever you are inside your sub.
