Well, I need to experiment some more still... but it looks like the issue may be solved. I just played for about an hour with no issues whatsoever.

Found a video that showed where to find the crash dump files (C:/Windows/Minidump/) and how to analyze them via an online dmp file analyzer. That led me to checking for a bad "atikmpag.sys" file in the System32/drivers folder. Turns out, the file wasn't bad... it was completely missing. Copied it over from the latest version in the appropriate AMD folder and voila! I'm guessing the file didn't get installed with one of the many updates and that's why we just suddenly started having trouble. I'll mark this thread SOLVED as soon as I'm sure this did the trick. As unpredictable as the crashes are it may take a few days to be fully confident in the solution. But I'm actually optimistic for once. I'll also post links to the info I used to find this out since the actual solution may be somewhat different for others.

This must be why they recommend DDU if you can't get graphics related programs running right (DDU completely nukes GPU drivers, allowing for a clean install).

I've used DDU several times without noting any difference in performance. I don't see how it would help here, assuming this file is the problem, since this is a case of something not being installed at all rather than an older version lingering around.

I did get another crash, this time from a missing "atikmdag.sys" file that I should have checked when I added the "atikmpag.sys" file. There's been another Radeon update and some Windows update as well. Just not feeling like gaming at the moment, so haven't tested everything out. Did let my wife explore the new update though. We swam around for a good little bit, watched some Hulu for a while, and had no trouble with any of it. So here's hoping. Still intend to build a new rig when tax time rolls around. But solving this issue may help somebody else, so I'm continuing to pursue it for educational purposes.

Well, I'm making progress. Wife had another crash and I found a new program I could download that checks all the logs in the Minidump folder and gives a chart with a ton of useful information. That showed me that most of the crashes have been due to Windows issues, not AMD issues. And quite a few of them have been due to "watchdog.sys". So now I just need to figure out how to repair that. The bad news is that the little bit of research I've done leans towards it being a compatibility issue between W10 and my coal-powered motherboard. It may be that my BIOS just isn't going to play nice with the latest version of Windows.

    Win + X + A
    chkdsk c: /f

That's just to be sure you're doing the following steps from a healthy filesystem.. you might have to restart to do chkdsk, if that's the case, then Do Win+X+A after the restart and continue:
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    then after that's done,
    sfc /scannow

Just wanted to update this thread in case anybody with similar issues happened to be reading it. I am cautiously optimistic that I have resolved the problem. I spent quite a few hours yesterday playing a different game and had no crashes.

I think it may have been several small problems acting together:

    1) The PCIe GBE Family Controller driver was out of date. It wasn't as simple to track down as it should have been. But Realtek has a newer version available in a zip from its Downloads page. Hopefully, the new rt604x64.sys driver helps.

    2) The drive was overstuffed. We had just 3 GB empty on a 250 GB SSD. I reconnected the hard drive and moved all our storage (Downloads, Documents, Videos, etc) to it. Freed up about 60 GB on the SSD.

    3) Moved the fan on the CPU cooler. Out of the box, the fan was trying to pull air into the case rather than pushing it out. It probably wouldn't have made a difference except that this meant it was fighting the natural convection current of the hot air trying to rise out of the case. I never saw any thermal issues in any of the testing I did. I really doubt this made a huge impact. But every little bit helps when you're on the edge of stability.

So that's a few things others might want to check if they get random BSOD crashes while playing. We'll see how much of a difference it's really made.

Yeah, you want to keep about 15% space free on an SSD, and certain types of personal storage (pretty much anything document, audio, or video related) doesn't really benefit from SSD speed because it's either small to begin with (documents) or streams at a fixed rate to play back (audio / video). Programs / OS / swap space (virtual memory) are the main thing that benefits. Unless you're running a media server to multiple clients at a time.

    Tip for everyone here.

Always install games to a separate, built-in (OR EXTERNAL) drive. Filling up another drive means your main OS drive still has space to run properly.

    Something I've learned from experience.

Here I am wanting to play the game again (I played it start-to-finish shortly after release with not a single crash), and I can't get more than 10 minutes in if I'm lucky before I get the darn d3d11.dll access violation, and nobody on the entire internet has a proven cause and workaround or solution to the issue :( I just want to play the game again

Does any of the multitude of threads about this issue actually have a proven solution, or are they all random combinations of randomness and pure luck?

Mostly random. My issue is almost certainly due to the age of my system. Whatever workarounds I come up with aren't likely to help anybody with a rig less than 10 years old.

For what it's worth, even with clearing up space on the SSD and all the other bits I've done I still get crashes. I'm trying one last thing, upgrading the CPU. I didn't realize there's room to upgrade on this LGA 775 motherboard. So I spent $45 on the fastest processor that will work, a Q9650. It's a bit silly, but I just don't have the $1,800 to get my Newegg wishlist sent to me. The new CPU is about 12% faster and has newer rulesets on it... I'm hoping that's enough to scrape by for a few more months. In a couple weeks I'll have the cash to get my new motherboard so I can begin working on the new case to get my fancy rig built.

This will be the final update on this thread since there is nothing left to be done and, I fear, no way to resolve the issue.

I went with the nuclear option. As mentioned in my previous post, I bought a Q9650 to replace the Q6700 that came with the rig. I was hoping the slightly higher clock speed would help. With a bit more research I found there was also a newer LGA 775 motherboard available for cheap that supported DDR3 RAM instead of the DDR2 that came with the rig. So I bought the motherboard and 8 gigs of G.Skill RAM. All total it cost me about $150 to upgrade the rig. Which is less than anything but the cheapest new CPU by itself. I also did Fresh Start to get a clean install of Windows 10 and ran sysprep to generalize the OS before swapping the parts. So there was no danger of any leftover software or drivers messing with anything. And I still get the crashes. I went from a 2.66 GHz CPU with 800 MHz DDR2 to a 3.00 GHz CPU with 1,333 MHz RAM and got no performance gain at all. Bizarrely, the CPU-Z benchmark shows performance has actually dropped with the new setup. I don't know if tinkering with the RAM timings would help. But I'm not terribly motivated to try. If anybody has some optimization tricks to try I'd be glad to hear them.

It just has to be that the system firmware is too old to be stable with W10. Maybe I could find a board that would work. But I'm not throwing any more money at this box. I'll just have to live without gaming until I can get the funds to build the new rig.

If that's 2 sticks of dual-channel memory and you have 4 slots, be sure they're in the right slots to run in dual-channel mode.
  • SouthernGorillaSouthernGorilla United States Join Date: 2017-07-26 Member: 232057Members
    Only two slots available.

I need to go into the BIOS and check the alpm setting. I've seen one post on the net of a guy having exactly the same problem with a completely different setup. He disabled alpm and it went away.

I too am having an issue with the game crashing often as well. It started yesterday, game was working fine. But now, any attempt to load the game via steam, and the game acts like it's going to launch, and then nothing happens. Literally. Steam goes form saying Subnautica is running, to nothing at all. Game doesn't even try to load. Error log follows with system specs, perhaps someone smarter than myself can figure this out.
