At the moment both the EXO and Onos are relatively boring units. The Onos is a mega-skulk and the EXO is a mega-turret. Additionally, because they can easily be used as assault tanks, trains of either can be quite effective.
For the Onos, turn them into a mobile hive and let Stomp temporarily spread infestation. Anything the khamm can do within range of a hive, they'd be able to do within range of an Onos.
For the EXO, give them an inventory. Anything that the comm dropped onto the exo would instead be stored for later use. So the EXO would effectively become a mobile armoury.
Both units would need to be nerfed in some other way, but they'd turn from being a unit that leads an effective assault to one that provides support to an effective assault.

Why do they melt to damage so quickly than
The issue that has always been there is that these beasts both look like tanks but really aren't, which turns them into beginner traps.
The Onos is a crowd controlling hit and run unit, while the EXO is kinda the "not so effective" replacement for heavy trains from NS, mostly because they can't weld each other as a response to the removal of devour and them being too big for devour anyway.
Although, it would be a pretty neat addition to support the Onos by giving it those environmental effects you mentioned. Not sure how much it will gobble up engine power to have "dynamic infestation" around her, we all know how much trouble infestation and cysts have caused for FPS and tickrate throughout development. It all kinda reminds me of that suggestion, where the Fade's blink would affect lights, causing them to flicker and stuff...
