The day is very beautiful and great to look at from within your base but the night is a bit too dark. Its just a black window from within base.
Even in the shallows the bio-luminescence is too low.
Something I noticed is that the light from existing luminescent is not reflecting onto the ground/water around the plant/animal. Would be awesome if flora and fauna would be closer to the movie Avatar.

My wish would be that a flashlight is not required while swimming through the shallows at night. Even the moons lighting coming through the water could be increased...
Last screen shot is of a Unity light reflection demo which should be implemented?

See below some screenshots:

Having a play around myself with lighting this looks 100% better to me:
Upped the Contrast and also lightened up around glowing objects. Also lightened surfaces that the moon light would brighten naturally...

You are still comparing underwater vs above water and realtime renderen vs prerendered. Just look at the amount of plants and illuminated props in Avatar

Also just throwing out some crazy filters on Subnautica, I dunno looks wierd :D

I might be trolling just a teensie tiny bit though

Try using ReShade and setting up a shader, maybe you can get it more to your liking.

Well to be fair, I did overdo it "a bit", but a post processing injector might indeed do the trick to make it suit your taste. Hmm a more realistic water tint could be achieved with that as well...

I think that nighttime in subnautica SHOULD be dark. Otherwise we'd have no need for flashlights, and there'd be too much glowy stuff.

areas of the Grand Reef should be like: but with lighter blues and fewer greens. https://www.dadsguidetowdw.com/image-files/naviriver1-brett.jpg

Nighttime should be different. I don't now about simply "brighter", but that's a good start.

The bio-luminescence should be brighter and more colorful. The night world is supposed to be very dangerous, but also very beautiful.
