Base perimeter defense?

Seeing as how i'm starting a new playthru with the game finally out, i thought i'd bring up an old suggestion i brought up quite awhile ago.
As the title suggests, would it be possible to give us an invisible defense field of some kind, designed to keep out medium or smaller threats? (talking about stalkers, sandsharks, bonesharks, bleeders and biters, and the projectiles from tiger plants) This would open up quite a bit more of the earlier area's for possible base-building, w/o having to worry about being attacked the moment you step out of the airlock. Naturally i wouldnt expect for the players to get it easily, or to cost little-to-nothing to maintain, power-wise. (Would make thermal/nuclear/bioreactors more valuable to the player/gaming experience as well, imo)
