I think this would be a nice addition to the game because its a weapon yes but it is lore friendly and another way for the player to defend themselves.
Instead of a Weapon to harm or kill, how about a tranq rifle. you fire the dart or whatever ammo out and it impacts a creature and it stuns it for a sort time 10-15 seconds for creatrues like stalkers, gastros and other medium sized fauna and 3 to 9 for creatures like reapers or other large preditorial ones. not harming the fish but allowing you to escape from a reaper or such if needed or to get past them if they are being twats and guarding where you need to go
Or just use the stasis rifle like a normal person since it stuns creatures for longer depending on how long you charge it
True, and i didnt really think aobut that at first but now i have, would still love to see another type of tool made for dealing with dangers in a non lethal way
What about a harpoon gun as a tool, not a weapon? Tagging large/medium creatures to track and monitor them, similar beacons but they will move with the creature. Might also be used to mark biomes that you don't really want to get any closer to put a beacon. Or maybe as a grappling hook for the player. Many kinds of ammo could be used, like the seaoth torpedoes, just more utilitarian.
Didn't mean to offend the animal activists in the world of subnautica but whats with all the non lethal weapons? I can guarantee that those animals aren't thinking non lethal so why should I? If that animal is gonna come at me I'm gonna come right back and see who eats who now.
Not only is it established that weapons were removed from all Survival Blueprint Databases, but weapons just don't fit with Subnautica's theme.
The game would be so different if you could have a gun.
Oh, is that a sand shark? BANG BANG dead.
Ooh, a Reaper? BOOM Dead.
And even a harpoon gun seems out of place. Alterra wouldn't use them too often, more then likely using something else. They wouldn't make sense to have as the only lethal weapon available for Survival Blueprints, as it is considered a lethal weapon that could kill.
Anyways, that was my opinion.
Now i'm going to stretch this out by my favorite game, quote-n-respond!

It is mentioned that the reason that there is no blueprints for weapons is because of a massacre that happened on some other planet, but is someone going to go on a massacre with a harpoon gun? Sound unlikely. You also mentioned that this wouldn't be a piece of equipment that Alterra would have as a blueprint because of how often it would be used. It could easily be implemented as a piece of equipment used specifically in the event of a water landing or crash which is the occasion in the game.

Besides, not every game has to be about being on the top. Once you are on the top the game becomes to easy and less scary and can even get boring if you can just kill everything easily. By having no weapons in Subnautica, there is always a challenge to keep things exciting. Think about it like in Mario Kart. The items you get are based in what place you are in. People in the back will get the more powerful items to help them while the person in first place gets the weaker items. This is so that the person in first place is having a challenge of trying to keep their place without it being too easy....and to give other people a chance. Same thing in Subnautica, by never being at the top of the food chain, you are always going to have a challenge.

Now I understand that this can be lethal but so can running into the animals with the seamoth so whats the difference? You still don't get rewarded with loot for killing it but it gives you that sense of safety to carry it around. Maybe the devs can make sure its not OP. The devs could tinker with it however they please like making it so that you need multiple shots to kill an animal which keeps that fear factor because its not as powerful as you think but still does the job. Its the same for the seamoth, you feel invincible but you realize that its not as tough as you think but it still gives you that small sense of safety.
Another point Is that I think that people are getting confused with an actual gun and a harpoon gun. I don't want actual guns that shoot bullets in the game because I think THAT will break the lore. A harpoon shoots a single metal harpoon. It is used by divers for fishing and could be used as self defense if need be which could be incorporated into the game in my opinion.

The animal activists in this game are just like the overprotective animal activists from the ngo peta, which freak out when a animal gets killed in a video game (killing humans in a game is ok for them but animals not...thats where they draw the line).Just like in all of those hollywood movies where dozens of humans die but not one single animal. When was the last time you saw a pet likle a dog or cat die in a movie? We should value human life just as much as the life of the rest of the animals (even with all of our flaws, other animals have flaws too, they just dont have the brain capacity to duplicate them as rapidly. But if they had they wouldnt be in any way better then us).
Im also very interested in biodiversity and i like to dive as often as possible.I would never hunt a animal in real life. But i really like to encounter different dangerouse creatures who try to kill you in videogames, overcome my fears and fight them. I mean thats one of the core aspects of a survival game. Sadly some of the devs got brainwashed by peta like activists or did always think this way before and so they try to take the fun parts out of the game, just because they cant distinguish real life from a video game.
And most people will see the harpoon gun as a weapon and use it to attack not self defense.
Thats the point of any piece of equipment is that you can use it however you want.
What would you do if you crash on this planet. Would your first thought be: "i must be really carefull to hurt non of those (giant) predators which try to kill me" ?
But if you have a mindset where it is more important to follow your idiology thinking then puting things into the game which would make sense, then the game gets not better through that.
I said this here befor, if you want to feel alive, awake and feel a real sense of tension in you while exploring the world, then the world must be dangerouse in a way that you can be killed in every second and around every next corner, if you are not carefull. And there is no danger without violence of some sort, in the game. If you build a game where the player realizes very quick that even the predators are realative harmless and are only there to fake a false sense of danger (they do not even behave like most preadators in real life, so dont come me with the argument that it has to be realistic), then the game becomes very shallow and meaningless after a while.Because there is no real obstacle in your way beside of finding the recepies for creating the tools, which is definately a fun part of this game, but after15-20 hours you have found most tools and then the game becomes boring. The only thing which is then left to be done is building a few different bases for a while. I had for 20-30 hours a good amount of fun in the game, but then i got bored and now i only wait for the dlc to happen. But if the dlc is like the dlc in most other games nowadays, in the sense that you pay 1/3 of the fullprize game but get only 1/15 of the content of the fullprize game and the creatures are just as harmless and unchallenging as in the core game, then i think i wont buy the dlc either. In games like minecraft with modding support such things do not happen as fast. Because you can expand the core game with all the mods or try to create mods on your own. Minecraft had a way more long lasting end game and libary on tools and machines to create and gamemodes to try out , thx to modding tools.

I’m pretty sure the Reapers an insta kill.
Its not I have been attacked by both the Reapers and The Ghost Leviathans but do they take away about 3 quarters of your health
in my personal opinion and i believe many others that Harpoon guns should never be added because it is a gun and lore wise it would conflict with why guns where removed from stranded survival blue prints because of a massacre that happened on a other planet.
and by the way the propulsion gun the repulsion gun and stasis rifle is enough to defend your self and no one would go on a rampage killing everything so my point is guns would remove the fun out of the game and a harpoon gun is still a gun that hurts and kills in real life sure it's used for hunting but it's perfect for killing stuff just for fun

I don't think people know what a harpoon gun is. Just because it has the word gun in it does not make it an actual gun. The only relation it has with an actual gun is that it shoots projectile. its a metal spear that is propelled if that makes it sound better. I would not consider a harpoon gun a real gun. There is a reason they don't have REAL guns as blueprints but like I said in an earlier comment no one is going to go on a murderous massacre with a harpoon gun so saying that does not make sense.

See, that's not fully why most of us dislike it.
I dislike it, like many others, because we don't need any other guns. Along with that, it still doesn't make sense to have them.
Just because it doesn't shoot a "Bullet" it's still a gun. It shoots a projectile using gunpowder (Or other tech).

A speargun is propelled using either air or rubberbands so thats like calling a slingshot a gun because it shoots a projectile. You mentioned that subnautica does not need anymore guns but what guns are there? The only thing I can think of is the propulsion gun and talk about something that isnt a gun. The thing about a speargun too is that it is a tool used by divers and one thing you do a lot of in subnautica is dive. I see that people are against GUNS and I agree but I would not consider a speargun a gun and thats why I am for it.

a harpoon gun shoots it's own ammo which is made just for it and it would be cheap to make probably just some titanium and maybe silicone rubber for the fins or that would probably just be titanium as well. The propulsion gun does not have ammo which is made just for it. it shoot anything that can be picked up and it uses a lot of power to hold that projectile what ever that is before shooting it and a sling shot can kill someone with one shot a harpoon can except if they make it weak so that it takes 5 shots to kill a stalker and 6 for a boneshark? might as well just use a stasis rifle and do what ever u have to or kill it with a knife which is used for more that just hunting and self defense
Can you stop calling us animal activists. We are only against the harpoon gun because it goes against the devs ideas. They don't want a harpoon in the game. Sure, a harpoon gun can be used for self defense but it can also be used to just kill everything.

This discussion has so much text and appears so fruitless.
I for one do not want weapons in the game, you may call me a brainwashed petanimalctivist if you want. I don't mind.
I'm not against animal slaughter in games. I just don't think it fits within this particular game design. It's an advanced culture that, by the looks of it, has abandoned meat as a food source to the point that it became taboo.
Also current civilian survival kits do not usually contain weapons. I think that's because weapons do not significantly enhance your survival rate. It's usually wounds, thirst and starvation that get to you.
However I would love to see a harpoon gun in the game, it is a simple weapon which focus on survival. It could kill small game, and reel it in. Or be used to deal knife damage to a larger enemy, getting your bolt stuck to it for a while. The recipe could be, as suggested by @Logan_Walker, titanium, silicon rubber and, I would add, fiber mesh to produce a harpoon gun with a single bolt attached to it, so it can be reeled back after shooting.
Its use would be for hunting small fish and I would make it almost useless against larger animals.
Because real life handheld harpoon guns are great against small fish, not so much against larger animals. This video (warning - graphic) shows what might happen if you try harpooning a small shark. Now imagine doing it against a larger, armored, space shark.
hmm it could work but do the fish respawn in subnautica have not noticed yet so if they gonna add a harpoon gun into subnautica then the fish respawn rate should be faster or if they don't respawn they should otherwise the area is gonna be dead real soon
Comments
True, and i didnt really think aobut that at first but now i have, would still love to see another type of tool made for dealing with dangers in a non lethal way
In my personal opinion, guns would ruin the game.
Basically one of my points.
Agreed, the Stasis Rifle is all I need along with a Knife, and that reaper is dead.
Interesting idea, but as someone else said: The problem with having lethal weapons is that they will change the entire game. This is not how the game is meant to be played. Along with this, Alterra has removed weapons from Standard Survival Blueprints, so how would they even fit in?

That should explain it. And if you are going to ignore that. The devs have said they don't want lethal weapons. Which I like, it makes Subnautica unique to other survival games
Did you read my comment to AnomalyDetected?

But if they had they wouldnt be in any way better then us).
Im also very interested in biodiversity and i like to dive as often as possible.I would never hunt a animal in real life. But i really like to encounter different dangerouse creatures who try to kill you in videogames, overcome my fears and fight them. I mean thats one of the core aspects of a survival game. Sadly some of the devs got brainwashed by peta like activists or did always think this way before and so they try to take the fun parts out of the game, just because they cant distinguish real life from a video game.
Its not I have been attacked by both the Reapers and The Ghost Leviathans but do they take away about 3 quarters of your health
and by the way the propulsion gun the repulsion gun and stasis rifle is enough to defend your self and no one would go on a rampage killing everything so my point is guns would remove the fun out of the game and a harpoon gun is still a gun that hurts and kills in real life sure it's used for hunting but it's perfect for killing stuff just for fun
The propulsion gun does not have ammo which is made just for it. it shoot anything that can be picked up and it uses a lot of power to hold that projectile what ever that is before shooting it and a sling shot can kill someone with one shot a harpoon can except if they make it weak so that it takes 5 shots to kill a stalker and 6 for a boneshark? might as well just use a stasis rifle and do what ever u have to or kill it with a knife which is used for more that just hunting and self defense
thank you for making my point
