Another Way To Distribute Ns Files

Gnutella!
In an effort to hepl get the NS files out there here are the magnet links for the offical NS files to date. I've got them hosted on my laptop which has Shareaza running most of the time. Who'd've thunk, a legit use for the network. Anyway, the more people that host the files on the Gnutella network the easier it is to find these files. It's been my experience that files that are normally free like this spread like wildfire and are quite easy to obtain.

You better hope people who download it from gnutella are smart enough to check an MD5 hash of the file or something, or this just looks like a quick way to hacks/virus/trojan-ville.

    Bad idea.

Valve already has Steam. We can just wait for that.

Not to mention the fact that this stuff is copyrighted by the dev team. Did you check the license? Otherwise this could be a flagrant copyright violation.

Erm, well, slight problem with your theory. See this part of the link:
    bitprint:4HEPOL5UTVGQF2NVZ6D24HB2KDA26BID.PZIKDYAH7B2S2HK5CACJVJUITXOZ5ZO3PTKX3QQ

Give you a guess what it (*COUGH*HASH*COUGH*) is. When you use one of those links with an appropriate client it searches for the hash of the file. As for the license the file is on several public servers which they link to. This is no different and they can place the magnet: (or gnutella: or e2dk:) links along with it.

As for Steam, pardon me if I don't like handing over distribution to a single, commercial, source and presume that it will always be free. Furthermore is Steam available on Linux? I haven't heard word one about it being available there even though one or two servers are run on Linux.

Please, get the facts before ya go blasting something, alright?

The files were released for public distribution. If the public want's to distribute it to the public, then who cares?

Good thinking, but I'd rather not DL off someone's cable modem. However, still, it IS a valid use for the network.

What about downloading it off 5 cable modems, 2 dsl modems, and 3 university connections? The beauty of these networks is that you don't DL from just one person at a time, you download parts from many sources.

Ok, presuming you're talking about the speed this is only an issue early on. Most modern servants swarm files. Swarming is when a servant connects to multiple sources, downloads discrete portions from those sources and then reassembles them into the file when complete. This pretty much negates the speed issue when it comes to popular files, especially if each person who downloads the file also shares the file in turn.

The only problem would be when the file is new and only on one servant. This, too, is addressed in that some servants allow downloading of partial files. IE, you can get the portion of the file they have even though they themselves do not have the complete file. So while you're downloading bytes x-y from servant one you could get bytes y-z from the main source. Also servants can store alternative sources for files. While this is normally for other servants it also can be a plain-jane static URL. So you could be getting bytes x-y from servant one, contact the main servant who is busy and offers the web site that hosts the file as an alternative and be getting the remainder from there. Of course the last part is moot in NS' main files because they are served from large file providers who's bills are paid by advertising on web pages that they force you to go through to get the URL to the file which resides in a dynamic location. I really do lament the loss of a plain ol' FTP site.

Given the option of downloading a file from something like Fileplanet with its download queues (15-90 minutes) or finding it on Gnutella and swarming it from 4 different sources and be playing in about the same time I far prefer the latter. The problem is that Gnutella, as it stands, is poor for finding specific files at a moments notice. Well, that is until the advent of the magnet:, gnutella: and e2dk: URNs. Of course the file still needs to be on an active servant in your scope but popular files often are on dozens of servants. That is why I've put up the magnet: URNs and have placed the files on my servant's share list. I am just one servant but it has to start somewhere, right?

when they are fast http server you should post magnet links like this so you get faster speeds...

    magnet:?xt=urn:bitprint:G2G2P6AYG3S7QTTKIPHCWVPLEXORLAHZ.QZR3EFPO7MFZT6UXAHQSRRGBUTBAGOQ5SSXPA7Q&dn=ns_install

    exe&xs=http://files.games.eftel.com/halflife/ns/ns_install_v1.exe&xs=http://210.0.163.146/ns/ns_install_v1.exe

if you try to download this magnet link in shareaza you will download from all the http servers + g2 network all at the same time. give you the best download speed..

Well thats up to you. but you going to have to find a bt tracker that will not get overloaded.

Well ns v2.0 will be on http://www.GamePhilez.us which is a p2p site thats hosts free game files like mods and stuff like that. Site is still been coded.

It has a T3 p2p file server for all the files on the site.
all links on the site are magnet links which are for shareaza runing on Gnutella2 network.

    Test some links out...
