General Lighting Dev Team Question

Hi, I'm not sure where to post this, but Subnautica is created in Unity. It seems to have solved a lighting problem that we're having, and I would LOVE to know how you accomplished it. Actually, I would love to see anything on the more technical side of the making of Subnautica. Specifically however, how did you accomplish making an area dark, say like the creepvine fields, and having a well lit indoor area such as a base? I can't seem to get well lit indoor areas without pumping up the ambient lighting, and then my dark areas are too bright.
