have you noticed your over cocky use of the word n00bs? Yes everyone is new, and this game is far from going down becuase of them, if anything its the idiots like you who are takin it down.
No, it is actually GREAT that newbies are "taking over" the game. New players are necessary for a game to survive, they are new blood which can determine whether this mod ever beats CS or just becomes some forgotten mod only played by the hardcore fans.
If you have a newbie in a game thats making you angry, don't just curse him off or whatnot, teach him the ropes. In a recent game, we taught a total-first game-newbie Likwid until by the end of the game he was an indispensable part of our team.
ns has a nice community, one of the main reasons i decided to stick with ns why this one game a first timer was one our team(marines) we went around teaching him litterally everything, we just told him to follow orders and/or stick with me and other guys (the most expierienced marines on the team) so he can learn what to do and waht not to do,by the end of the game we hadthe aliens down to just one hive and we hear him yell "I got the hive!", then 5 minutes later he kills their last guy with a knife,i think he will be staying in ns for a long time, whats is my point here? be nice to the newbies, for it is them who make a game what it is,they come, they stay, they tell friends and on and on and on until this game overthrows cs *smiles*
As said, n00bs aren't the problem really, it's morons. Morons who hurt your team by incredibly bad play (especially as comm or gorge) and refuse to ask for or even accept help from other players.
Ahnteis that is exactly what i meen by n00bs. i meen sometimes all build offensive towers on someone if they flame me in my clans server instead of kicking them
I love newbies... on the other team <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
Not all newbies to NS are a problem, but a handful of them cause some major problems.
The biggest noob problem, aside from constantly begging the commander for items, comes from new players evolving to gorge. The first time someone plays aliens, the first evolve they can do is gorge, and knowing nothing about the game, they decide to see what it is all about. Once I notice that we have a gorge on our team that doesn't know what he is doing, I will politely try and talk them into changing back into a skulk. Now, after I explain that the gorge is for advanced players, and that it hurts the team for an inexperianced player to be a gorge, most players will kindly say, "Sorry" and resume the game as a skulk.
The problem lies in the arrogent newbies who refuse to help the team, and decide that they want to play gorge no matter what anyone tells them. These players usually respond with messages like, "I'm just trying it out, I want to learn." Then they start getting rude, and spend the whole game as a gorge. I've lost a few games because of newbie gorges sucking up all the resources. This is a waste of my time. This is the point when I start to get furious and stop being friendly. These players have no regard for the fact that the other people on their team are there to play a game and they are trying to win. They just don't care.
I have no idea how these players should be dealt with, but if the marines have the option to boot their commander, it would be nice if the aliens had some way to force inexperianced gorges to play another class.

We all know this game has a very sensitive strategic environment. Personal survival is not enough, the survival of your team is essential for your own survival so your actions must be honed to put your own interest second and your team's interest first.
People that are new to the game can either learn and adapt to this team environment, or, if they continue to conduct themselves the way you describe, they will die a whole lot and eventually leave.
Adapt or die. Natural Selection.
I'll give my undivided attention to those who want to learn and I let nature sort out the rest, my time is too precious for complaining.
I don't think "n00bs" are taking over NS, I think what has happened is a large number of us have finally figured out what the heck we're doing. When NS came out, we were ALL new, and when we did something stupid, there was no one who knew better to point it out. Now that NS has an experianced community of players, those who are just now hearing about it are entering a different world than those who've been playing since release did - they have more experianced players to learn from. So what's the use of flaming them? Trying to drive away all of the players this mod needs to survive? Teach them. Ignorance (that is, being a "n00b") isn't the same as stupidity. Teach them to play, teach them to enjoy the game, and just maybe you'll run into them someday in the future, and you'll have a competent player covering your back instead of someone who's chronically defensive and off ramboing, trying to prove he's better than all the rest.
No offense, Ahnteis, but it's impossible to learn to play NS without actually playing NS. I read every page of the manual before I loaded it for the first time and I was still pretty lost for an hour or two.
Newbies are one thing. Idiots who won't listen to a word you tell them no matter how many times you say please or be polite as you can before getting enraged is another thing. From my experiences, 75% of the "people who don't know how to play" (I'd prefer that over 'n00b' because the game is new itself) don't listen to your advice and think they know everything.
NS Guides is a newbie website / instructional group. They also run a server especially for teaching people how to play the game. They were (are?) linked from the main NS page.
Personally, I would much rather play with a 'n00b' who will accept team instructions (not nessesarily mine) than a guy whose played 5 times and considers themselves l33t and above working with the team.
As an alien tactics are fairly straight forward. A gorge needs to get to a hive and build it and the skulks need to slow down the marines until the second hive is secured. This is very easy for a new player to understand and I would like to see that 'if your new to ns go for marines' message removed. A new player can be an effective gorge if he follows instructions.
Marines are supposed to follow the comms orders. Simple. I try to always follow orders even if I think they are wrong, at most I will suggest an alternate course of action but at the end of the day the comm is the boss. Following a bad order with the whole team is much more likely to succeed than everyone going their own way. Interestingly new players can accept this for the first half dozen games and then they (some) get cocky, start calling people people n00bs and disagreeing with everyone elses tactics thinking they know better.
I have hung my head in dispair after hearing some comms orders, resigning to the fact that we were definately going to loose because he obviously doesn't know they first thing about tactics. Dutifully following orders anyway only to be surprised that the games turned around and we've won. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Encourage new players to join both teams. They are a good thing for the game.

Don't diss newbies, they keep games alive.
But don't get upset my inexperienced players, help them to become experienced players... Give them constructive advice.
Remember, you were a "n00b" once too...
PS. "Stupidity" is not synonymous with "n00b" - some people are just plain stupid. Best tactic is to just ignore them.

I call it "being nice" and it's a winning formula.
