<div class="IPBDescription">Defend base?</div> The strat I have seen work the best as commander is to build an inf portal, armory, observatory, then leave some (1 or 2) marines to guard base while the rest go to an open hive, build there, another inf portal, phase gates, etc.
However, this strat does not work so good if we don't have a good team. So can anyone suggest a strat that works well if you have marines that are not . . . good (can't shoot the broad side of a mountain).
Building a TF and a bunch of turrets at base takes to long and to many resources but without it my team sometimes gets chomped. I've seen some people say they build 1 turret (?) at base but I don't see how that would help much.
Anyway, what's the best SAFE build strat?
p.s. this is for playing on a public server where you may have anywhere from 3-7 marines on a team at any point.

This is death because u controll no RTs
Heres a good method even if marines are total noobs:
(works well in xx/14 and up servers)
inf port x 2
Armory
(leave 2 marines at spawn to defend)
Send a WP to your favorite Res Node(if the map has a double node like HOLO u must go there and secure it), I like to get a hive, but its hard for REALLY noobish marines to walk that far and stay alive. Drop the RT and get it built dont bother securing it unless its in a hive or right next to one (pumping station for example)
Once the RT is built send them to the next Res Node, again build it and only secure if its in or near a hive. If your RTs stay up for 45 seconds or more you earn back more than what they cost to build. Repeat this process untill you controll 3 RTs outside your spawn (5 is better but hard to do with noobs)
Next comes the Arms Lab (by this time res flow should be good, unless your base defenders got eaten and you lost the CC) Get the armor upgrades first (lev 1 and 2) then the lev 1 weapons upgrade.
Durring this time you should be trying to set a WP to a hive the balance here is very important, if you are playing against a team of good aliens then you must secure a hive as one of your first Res Nodes, that way you can push for a second hive to stop the Fade Counter attack.
Once in a hive, drop the RT and secure it with a TF and 4 turr build Obs in Spawn and drop Phase to both places this tactic usually gives you a good start.
Even if your marines are noobs, since you are not building much at the start you are saving Res, it gives you a good advantage when u make it into a hive with a few men because u have enough spare RES to drop a TF and turr right away, makes it easier to hold the spot
If you have rambos walking around, try and send em to random Res Nodes. If they manage to build it it should be worth its cost

I don´t think there is any "Safe build strat". It all depends on the players on your team and the other team.
Sometimes it works to build the IP´s, armory, observatory and phase gates to/near hive locations, but you often see your base eaten up like that.
When i am commander, i usually build a TF and 3 turrets max in base. 2 for the factory and surrounding buildings and 1 for the CC. But even that is not safe because a group of circlestrafing skulks can easily take down 1 of the turrets which opens up a clear way to either the TF or the CC and IP´s.
