Frozen Symbiotes bite repeatedly

Today as I was out looking for food I noticed a symbiote that had been frozen by a brinewing.
"Free meal!" I said.
"Just what I was thinking," replied the symbiote, as it bit me repeatedly in spite of being frozen solid.
It was as if I had picked up a mobile one: I would get bitten and my hand would thrash around (while the symbiote remained frozen), but then instead of dropping it after a few seconds I would continue to hold it as it bit me again. Unable to get rid of the angry fish, I lost a good third of my HP before the damn thing finally thawed and swam away.
As an aside: brinewings are surprisingly reluctant to attack the player. I didn't think they could until the other day when I was checking my PDA underwater and suddenly got blasted by one. Prior to that I had tried swimming in front of them, stealing their food, and slashing them, but they would completely ignore me.
