What Happened Was This....

Long battle report and tips for marines.
Ok, the game starts, we have a commander that doesn't talk and a bunch of marines sitting at the base. Map was caged so I scout out to generator hive and see that there isn't a hive there so I tell everyone to head to generator. Once everyone gets there (a total of 4) the comm lays down a tf and we proceed to build it then we all die by the hands of one skulk. The comm then leaves the chair and says he doesn't want to be comm any more, so I hop In. I build an observatory and phase gate at base and tell my marines to head to generator. We get generator secured with a phase and a couple turrets. Knowing that my marines can just hop through a nearby phase gate if generator is under attack I feel It is safe so i tell them to head to sewer. We get sewer secured and within a minute or so it gets under attack by some offensive towers hidden up above in those u-shaped vent things. I put down a siege turret and after it is up generator goes under attack I tell the marines that their main priority at the moment was to guard the hives until they are secured and specificly tell them that generator needs help, unfortunaty generator falls because my marines never went to generator and those that did were usually alone and ended up dying. So i gather up some marines and tell them to head to the resource node right outside of gen hive, some marines start to attack the alien resorc tower there while a couple others put up a phase and start on a tf. Then a couple fades roll in and kill everyone and everything. At the same time sewer hive falls under attackby a couple fades. I only had a couple turrets there and it ended up being destroyed faily quickly. A few minutes later after trying to get another group of marines to generator to sieze it (which fails) 3-4 fades start to harrase the base. Knowing that the game would eventually turn into a, "marines-turtle in base, onos come, marines die" i decided to recylce all the buildings so we could start over. I knew we couldn;t come back because I knew my marines were slow to follow my orders, and had little skill. We could have and should have won the game because we had two hives secured. We lost because my marines couldn't get to generator even after I told them they needed to get there fast and because the alien team had a couple good skulk players. Of course some of them were mad at me for recycling our structs and so i got blamed for the loss. Coincidentely, we had a bad comm the next round and were losing the game, a vote was started to kick the comm so I decided to vote yes to kicking the comm, he got kicked and i typed "". Then everyone blame me for kicking our bad commander and said that it was because i kicked the commander that we lost. They didnt seem to under stand that in a game with >15 people one person can not kick the comm by himself.

This game made me realize some reasons marines lose and some tips to help marines win:
1) Marines stay at base loading up until they have 250 lmg ammo and 30 pistol ammo and end up dying only firing 100 rounds. When will people realize that when things aren't looking good for the team you shouldn't spend your time at the armory.
2) If you plan on taking a hive early, always go for phase gates. Its cheaper to build a 20 resorc phase gate then a 25 resorc tf and its 19 resorc turrets. Its also faster and if all the marines die after getting it up they can quickly go back to help defend, if they die before it goes up you have only lost 20 resorcs. Its just better.
3) You need to have at least one rambo/scout to do many things: kill gorges, find out what the enemy is doing, sneak near a hive to put up a phase and cap any resorce nodes he/she might find. Having a couple rambos helps to give map control to the marines instead of letting the aliens have map control.
4) If you are a marine and don't know what to do there are many options:
-Defend any resorce nodes or hives your team has captured
-Find resourse nodes to cap
-find other marines and follow them
Of course these are options only if your comm hasn't/won't give you an order.
5) If you are planing an offensive and want to kill a hive do not attack the hive or any alien building near the hive unless you feel you can still kill the hive and deal with incoming alien forces. For example, if you, and your team are outfitted with lmg's and you know that the aliens have fades you shouldn't draw their attention untill you have turrets and phase. The reason for this being that attacking buildings lets all the aliens know that there is a free marine buffet in that area.

The game got me upset and i thought i should share. Let me know, was I a bad commander? Was I an **obscenity**? Is everything wrong with your life my fault?

Welcome to the wonderful world of commanding.

If you lose, no matter *what* happened in the game, it's always the commander's fault. The marines are never to blame. I hope you can tell I'm being sarcastic, because I'm laying it on pretty damn thick.

I also see you're new! Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the boards, Gizmo! That's one of the better frontline stories I've heard in awhile, and you make some good points. Few newer players (I'll just assume you're new because it's your inaugural [sp?] post to the boards) understand the value of phase gates and their ability to make up for the marines' biggest disadvatage vs. the Kharaa: mobility.

We hope to hear from you again. Remember, if you ever have a frontline story that would sound even better if you turned it into a hardcore fan-fiction peice (or even if it was just a normally detailed story like what you just gave us), the Fan Fiction section of the forums would LOVE to hear it!

Thanks for the welcomes, had no idea this forum is so friendly. Also, anyone know of some good servers with experienced regular players? I haven't played a good game on pubs for awhile...
