The desktop icon is bugged, and will not give you NS as a filter option. Delete the icon and find the "play NS" icon under start/programs... Drag it to the desktop an use that shortcut instead.
When filtering: select NS and make sure you DO NOT select "anti-cheating" or you'll find no servers.
While functional, the built-in search utility is not all it could be. I recomend you get Gamespy to look for servers (they're under Half-life/mods/NS). A lot of people prefer All Seing Eye, but you have to pay for that. Gamespy is free as long as you can put-up with the pop-ups.
    Good luck!

I highly recommend HLSW (http://www.hlsw.net). It's identical to All-Seeing Eye, but it's freeware.

I use The All-Seeing Eye all the time for finding servers and it is free. You do not have to register it, only if you want extra features, similar to GameSpy 3D. It is great because it lets you select individal maps to refresh server lists and filter out things like versions and if they use anti-cheat software or whatever. You can do other filters as well. I found this very useful in CS as I could refresh all the servers on just one map instead of the 20000 or so servers out there. Plus it auto-updates when you start it and it is very fast at adding new things.
