First attempt at texture creation

Please don't be too harsh...
With the help of Fam^ from #naturalselection, I ventured into the world of texture creation for Half-Life. I am attempting to make a set of custom textures I can use in my NS map, ns_moragoth. Here are the first 4 I made. Keep in mind that they may appear brighter in game, because this page's background is black, so that may make the image appear darker than it is. Also, they might not be that good, but I'm proud of them, and I'm trying to quickly improve my Photoshop skills and make more textures.

Here ya go:

They look good, not bad for a first time I'd imagine, looks like I'll have to bug Fam^ as well

It's a good start. Here's something to keep in mind though. You'll want to keep the size of the texture as small as possible while still keeping your tile pattern. Those first 2 textures could be cropped down to 64x64 or even smaller and they will still appear the same in-game, since they will tile. Also, for added realism, you may want to add some visual imperfections to the textures. They can be subtle things like light highlights, glares, pits, stains, a touch of noise, a slightly irregular edge here and there, or just slight variations in hue, saturation, or brightness across the texture's surface.

Most of all, keep at it! You are heading in the right direction.

Nice Arch. As Relic says, because at the moment they are tiled, making them smaller would be a good idea. However I think what Arch was going for was to put stains and the like on them, it just didnt look to realistic. Ill leave that until another time I think.

    Nice arch
Texture art is a very important part of most mod work and must be mastered to be of any use to modding teams. Modelling,Mapping,Prefabbing and Spriting require skills with textures and if you master them now - the HL engine is your oyster (or however you spell it).
Anyhow good luck with the texturing and i hope you get good

    Looking sweet!

There is some naming prefix for HL texs that randomly tiles a set of texs accross a surface. Put "SILO" into the filter option in WC or wally and check out some of the rusty ones. I think there is a option in WC's texture application tool relating to random tiling. Using this method you could put a stain/scratch/streak on one in 5 or 10 texs in a tiled section.

yeah, you -could- scythe, but that would like make your texture usage 5 to 10 times higher. easier to make a rust decal or transparent overlay.
