I say you should rent an x-box for Splinter Cell and download the Battlefield 1942 multi-player demo on Wake Island.
I have Battlefield in my collection but haven't bothered re-installin since format.
I also have access to Splinter Cell at my cousins house but he says its dull once you've finished it.
Don't splash out cash until you try demo's etc
I'd get BF1942, then wait for the CPU release of Splinter Cell, where more mods and maps could add to the replay value of the game. I still think that Splinter Cell will be very good for a short time, but once you clear the SP, it mecomes rather like Theif, you need to add on things to add to the life of the game, where with BF1942, you can master teh tank, then move to the planes, then hone your skills as a sniper, then try playing engeneer, then hook up with a clan, and do it in an organized fashon.
Do *NOT* get Splinter Cell on X-Box. it is vastly inferior. Of course that's my opinion, but I've played both and really due to the nature of the game (shooting things) aiming is MUCH easier on PC. This alone makes it rock on PC but (like all games where precise aiming is required) troublesome w/ a gamepad.
I haven't played BF1942 since the demo though, so I dunno if its any good or not...
but then you have splinter cell, with all the really nice graphics and dynamic lighting and sneaking and the nightvision, taking people hostage, and the infrared vision, and the optics cables, and the curtains, the bloody curtains!

And don't forget the new missions in splinter cell <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Still, I think that BF1942 will be better, at least until you can get your hands on the mods for SC.
Im going for BF 1942 when i get the money..... someday

I find sneaky games much much much more fun when occasionally they throw in a level or two where you can't kill people. It's alot more tense, and it's a different experience.
Anyways, Battlefield 1942 is very versatile, and its a good game in all respects, aside from being historically inaccurate and unrealistic. Don't get me wrong, realism isn't always a good thing, especially in games. However, I find the variation of playing online in BF1942 really thin and it didn't catch my interest really. However, if you're still up for BG1942, I suggest you try the Wake Island demo, that's not too bad.
All in all though, I would rather get the PC release of Splinter Cell and Battlefield 1942 not at all, but that's just myself.
Good parts:
VERY pretty. Feels like a sneaker. Low-light and thermo are *cool*, allowing you to peek through some doors and spot the guards on the other side (thermo), on occasion.
BF1942 has its own problems.. notably, minor to major visual glitches as of the current patch, on anything other than nVidiot cards. Teamplay isn't all it could be in the MP, and matches tend to drag on as a single suicide-capper kamikazes a plane to cap back one point or the other and get respawning again. Dramatic, yes. Irritating, even moreso yes. Long load times, mid-high hardware demands (frameskips occasionally on an Ath-700 with a Radeon 9000 Pro), and lack of voice support are probably the most irritating parts in my experience. Along with teammates blowing up your vehicles because you got there first and they wanted in.
Now the good parts.
Pitched battles that feel HUGE, rolling a tank in to bombard a villageful of enemy troops, suicide-Jeeping, running over enemy troops on the way in said jeep, taking down a plane that's trying to strafe you with a well-placed rocket launch, tracking planes in an ack-ack emplacement, dropping torpedo-bombs against invading carriers and battleships, hiding in some foliage as a Scout, sniping down enemies without damaging their vehicles, then taking them for your own.
I'd go with BF1942, myself. It's out at the moment, has a lot more replay value, and while lacking the pretty-pretties, it's a game you can keep playing for a good while and have fun, opposed to playing for a while out of frustration at a particular part in a certain level that is nearly impossible to get past.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I did this in the demo twice.
I love Tom Clancy games, and I love sneaky games (Thief, Deus Ex, other Warren Spector games), so Splinter Cell would probably be perfect for me. Not enough time to play though - I barely have the time to even play NS!

Deus Ex and Theif fan, Great NS commander, Likes Boondock Saints and The Usual Suspects....
Next thing you are going to tell me you dabble in Warcraft 3, fence Foil in your spare time, own a Tippman 98 Custom with X-Chamber, and are on your school's "In the Know Team."

I played War3 until the 1.04 patch came out.
I don't fence or play paintball.
I've never been on any team like that, but my mom says I'm cool. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
At least you get to *play* Splinter Cell for more than 15 minutes at a time.
Its a Halo mod btw.
