Sound Problems In Ns Using A Usb Headset

Anyway, here's the problem. Its a Labtec headset, with a USB connector. When i get into a game of NS, there's /alot/ of static on the ambient humming noises. No static anywhere else, only on the deep humming and rumbling sounds. Also, all sound effects happen a half a second after the actual event. So for example, I'll shoot, and a half second later, I'll hear the gunshots, or i'll jump, and half a second later I'll hear the jumping sound. This also applies to other players...I don't hear the sound of the alien biting me until half a second after im bit <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
The voice chat works normally. None of these problems show up using any other programs or games on my comp. The headset works perfectly in CounterStrike. Plus, my brother has a headset that plugs directly into the microphone and speaker connections, and it works fine in NS.
So it seems that this problem is specific to my using a USB headset with Natural Selection.
If anyone has any input it would be /much/ appreciated. Feeling pretty frusterated having dropped a chunk of change on a headset that won't function for the main reason I bought it.
(btw, I searched the forum for threads on a similar problem, but didn't find any. So I apologize if im repeating a problem that's already been posted. If it has, i missed it)

This is so weird. I figure it must have something to do with some NS-specific settings in console, since these problems don't show up anywhere else. I mean, if it were a sound card or driver problem, it would do the same things in CounterStrike, wouldn't it?

Anything with "USB" and "Sound" in the same sentence is trouble brewing. I don't know why, but the USB technology apparently hasn't matured yet, it isnt robust enough.
Could be that the problems don't appear in CS but i nNS due to the latter using more of the sound system. All depends on how they use sound, how much strain is put on your system. I bet it's a PCI bus problem. Some sound cards (especially Live!) have terrible PCI engineering and really hog the bus. That can be the case with many older PCI cards. They could also be disturbed by PCI latency timing problems (check out in BIOS). All kinds of scratchiness appears on sound. Sometime you solve it by upgrading VIA-4-in-1 drivers (for those with VIA chipset boards), other times you switch your sound card's pci slot position. In yet other instances you must upgrade sound card drivers. And sometimes you are advised to turn off UltraDMA-options for your drives. You could also try to turn on or off the USB Legacy option in your bios, if your mobo is new enough.
