Textures needed!

<div class="IPBDescription">Description? didn't you read the topic?!</div>Textures needed!

The ns and hl wads doesn't have what I need, too many "ready" textures! What I'd like is more plain textures with no big fat carvings n' stuff on them. Preferably dark brown metal surfaces.
I've already tried making my own textures, but it was a total failiure as you might already have guessed... <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
In addition to the "plain" textures there should be plate versions of them. Don't worry, I'll attach examples.
It would also be nice if there were some with old red or blue (maby green) paint on them, coming off because of rust.
Maby some with that alien goo on them?
It would also be nice with some light textures to go with the same theme. Am I asking for too much?

If you've played Q2, thats exactly the style I'm looking for. Lots of dark brown, grey and rusty metallic textures.
Just be sure not to make exact copies of the Q2 textures, we wouldnt want to get in trouble eh? <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

Here's the attached examples... (ofcourse, these don't have the right color... It's the shapes I'm interested in.)

Are you looking for some textures with a colour like the wet wall texture from the NS wad but with a pattern sort of like the one you have drawn. I created the textures on the Newbie Textures post and I wouldn't mind having a go at some other textures. If you like the look of the textures on my post I'd be glad to have a go at creating some for you. I think I could also do a lot better than my first try.  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Well, here is some screenshots from q2 of some of the similar textures... it would be nice if you made all the different textures in all the different variations of brown and grey and whatever, as seen in these pics. Just dont make them too similar, ok? Gotta be careful you know...
    Im looking forward to seeing the results!  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

btw... those other textures you made is really great! good job!

What's wrong with the ones you made? They look pretty good, I think. If you're just looking for a color change, try overlaying the rust texture or something.

well, the problem is, its not really supposed to be all rust... its supposed to be dark metal surfaces, not too much rust-red in them... Trust me, Ive tried making my own in photoshop, but I just couldnt get it right! Im not that good at surface stuff... check out "the king of paint" in the artwork forum part... thats what im good at.  <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

You need to kill the highlight a bit... it's too "digital", especially after you add the rust texture.  Looks nice tho!

Heh ya, woops. Didn't notice em in PS.

    how 'bout this? lol, it's my first try at a real texture, so be kind <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> (you don't have to, if you don't want to <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> )

Hmm... Shoven, looks pretty good! xept for those bright edges...
If you fix that, it just might do!
However, to be fair, I will wait till I see what SUPERNOVA can do... That is, if you still want to give it a try...
and if anyone else wants to try they are welcome aswell...

(heh, as I was typing this, someone DID join in... and I must say, looks pretty good for a first try, terawatt! WAY better than ALL of my attempts!  <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
A little brighter maby? I dont think it would look pretty good repeating the top left one over a wall...)

    3rd tries a charm
I should mention that all of the added parts were taken straight from the NS wad

Is this a *single* texture, or just a big block to be broken along the lines into little textures?  If it's a single piece, I might argue that the black lines between the squares are too precise, 1 pixel wide... it looks like a pixel, not a texture.

    /me blushes from embarassment
Wow Terawatt and Dan's are sweet.
Note to self: Never use overlay on white lines...

Don't bother waiting for anything from me, I'm new to texture making and I can't do as good as DanDaMan. I'd stick with the work he's done, it looks very good to me <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

Har. Better? A little? Still sucks? Oh well I'm working on it.
  • SinisterSinister Join Date: 2002-04-15 Member: 451Members
Shoven, I really liked your first one, if you could just tone down those white and black lines.
And, DanDaMan, looks quite good, just needs to be a little darker, and it would be much better if you could get rid of those black lines in the texture you used, they sortof dont fit in... take a look at the 2:nd left one at the bottom. However, it does look good on the top right one...

And could you guys make them look less rusty, and a little more greyish (still a little brown in them tho)

Shovens first one, I think, is the best one yet. Just tone down those lines...

Man, am I mean? I feel like Im hurting someones feelings writing this! <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo-->

okay, new approach this time. I hope this is what you are wanting
  • DanDaManDanDaMan Join Date: 2002-03-19 Member: 335Members
sorry, one last minute change.  I edited a few of the tiles for a little variation
  • DanDaManDanDaMan Join Date: 2002-03-19 Member: 335Members
ok, I think this is it, I think I've gone too far with this one texture and it's time to call it quits.
  • SinisterSinister Join Date: 2002-04-15 Member: 451Members
Wow! These are great! The last one could be used in the "closer to hive" areas maby?
Maby still a little bright, but they'll do just fine!
(ofcourse, if they were darker they wouldnt fit to good along with the other ns textures... silly me! <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> )

Are these in full quality, or did you have to lower the quality to be able to post them? If thats the case then you might wanna send them over email or something...
However, I'll use these while i wait.

btw, I'll be sure to put your name in somewhere in the map or in some textfile. Yeah, that sounds fair...

well I did the editing in 512 and then shrunk it down to 256, but you can't use anything higher than 256 anyways.  And I'm sure you can darken the textures on your own on whatever photo editing software you can manage to get your hands on.  Anything above ms paint should be able to do it.

You gotta tint the raised edges as well or it looks horrible, the whole thing should look brown, not brown with white strips
  • shovenshoven Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 29Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    Wow Dan, those are awesome <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
[edit] Would anyone mind if I used some of those too? [/edit]
  • DanDaManDanDaMan Join Date: 2002-03-19 Member: 335Members
sure, go ahead, anyone can use em.  I'd feel like I've been wasting my time if nobody did. :-D
  • SinisterSinister Join Date: 2002-04-15 Member: 451Members
Ive got photoshop, but I probably shouldnt change anything, Id just screw it up.  <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
Those edges looks fine to me, maby a little bright on the last one, we'll just have to see what it looks like in-game...

o, gotta run! school starts in 15 minutes! *runs to school*
