Mininuke = real nuclear weapon?

CrystalSnakeCrystalSnake Join Date: 2002-01-27 Member: 110Members
The name "mininuke" suggests that these weapons are in some way similar to real nuclear weapons.
When a mininuke detonates, will there be a bright flash that (temporarily) blinds everybody looking at it, like the flashbangs in Counter-Strike?
If you survive a mininuke explosion, will you become irratiated and slowly lose health points?

If a mininuke is just a very powerful conventional weapon, you might consider changing the name to something less misleading

The word "nuke" is a pretty generic term. Since the things can be used in space vehicles, and if you really need to have things rationalized, a neutron bomb is probably the closest explanation. Neutron bombs are designed to create as little structural damage as possible while still remaining absolutely lethal to living creatures. I believe the 'mininuke' that will be in NS is more like a building, in that it is a placed object that must be armed. Once it is primed, the commander can detonate it.

If a mininuke detonate near another mininuke, will both explode? That would mean the commander could create a nuclear disaster .

I think they're pretty expensive, might even be a limit on them, so you can't have more than 1 at the same time, to keep things balanced...And Relic is prolly right, why send in marines to try to save the structure from the aliens, and then nuke it to pieces, while they could easily nuke it from orbit, so think neutron bombs

I think the nuke will best serve as a booby trap. just leave it by the door...
• DanDaManDanDaMan Join Date: 2002-03-19 Member: 335Members
so why can't they neutron bomb it from orbit?
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Ehhh, because the bomb is created with a small dampening field around it which contains the blast to a very limited area, leaving the vital electronics of most of the battelfield intact.

Or something. It's all sci-fi, folks...

DanDaMan -- that would really defeat the purpose of the game, wouldn't it? Wouldn't you rather play Natural Selection than Natural Push Your "Launch Bomb" Button Really Fast?

But that could be a minigame! "How fast can you push the button?"

Will the mininuke create a shockwave? Lots of programming, eh? I think it'd be worth it, maybe for a later version

So if the nuke is stationary, I suppose it's main use will be to wipe out alien buildings, am I right? It's probably serve very little use as an offensive weapon, unless some n00b bob is stupid or something....
• The_ButcherThe_Butcher Join Date: 2002-03-30 Member: 363Members
LoL, stationary and a n00b come and say "So these things must me the phase gates everyone are talking about. Hey, it's not working, I can't teleport! (commander laughing his ### off and "accidentaly" press the "explode" button) N00b respawn (assuming ff is on): DON'T USE TELEPORTERS THEY'RE DANGEROUS!!!!!!1111 ONE JUST EXPLODED IN MY FACE!!!!!!112223344567673465

Would be funny to see a n00b arguing with other team members about the danger of phase gates.

Huh... I could see myself strapping one of those things to my back. And running in to an alien hive. And having it detonate. Man, that'd be cool. And it'd also be funny with that phase gate thing... "There was this big blinding flash, and then I respawned! PHASE GATES KILL YOU! DON'T TOUCH THEM!"

I still don't get the idea of having a nuke or some mega devestation weapon inside a cramped space ship. Having a weapon of that magnitude that would also defeat the purpose in my opinion. wether you're pressing the button from orbit, or from inside the map. It still has the same effect. What I would like to see for some sorta ultimate bomb thingy would be a firebomb that would clean out the inside of the hulls for a distance. I dunno the limits of coding, but volumetric fire would be sweet stuff. Imagine something like in aliens 3 when they soak the prison place in some kinda flamable liquid and it burns through a large chunk of the colony. Only this bomb would be on a smaller scale. And while I'm ranting my ideas in the wrong forum, the jetpack should be made into an anti grav pack for coolness sake

The nuke actually does make your screen go white if you see it go off. Nothing is irradiated, however.

umm wtf, why did you nuke my post mole, flay said it right here, i don't think he cared. Don't nuke my post if its really not hampering anything, the guy asked a simple question, and i answered it.

'cause his post wasn't up there yet, and I thought he didn't want us to say stuff like that...

Just thought about something someone who's making a map with a nuclear reactor could use:

At first the reactor is down so you have to repair it (by wielding), then it reactivate some lights and maybe some auto-defense systems in the map making it easier for the marines. In a control room, put like 4-8 switchs for the coolant system and you can disable them all to manually overload the reactor and maybe kill a load of aliens in the process? When you switch every switch off, it waits something like 30 seconds (warning players with a siren), then meltdown. To make it even better there could be a multimanager that creates explosions along the hallways, as if the fire was moving away from the core. It would look damn good. Then some walls could have holes through them or other kind of shortcuts, and most of the lights would be down, with only some emergency red lights flashing all over the place. Some areas could be irradiated too.

Sorry if someone already thought about this.

*I* like it! I mentioned in the mapping forum an idea for a base/station/whatever in the process of self-destructing... environmental hazards are fun!! (:

/me swears by Scripted_Sequence
and func_camera

i think the team should DEMAND from a map to have a standard 10-second intro movie...

i think about writing a mapping tutorial about this... but for this i need to know one thing:
is it possible to have it like this:
-player 1 triggers something
-he sees sequence1
-player 2 triggers same trigger as player 2
-they both see sequence2 and 3 until sequences are completed

instead of player 2 resetting the sequences when he triggers the thing again.
• DanDaManDanDaMan Join Date: 2002-03-19 Member: 335Members
I think if another player tried to watch your sequence through a camera at the same time that another player was, it might get kinda screwy. You'd probably wanna lock of other players viewing it until it is all over or have everyone see it at the same time or not use cameras at all. And last I heard cameras don't work in NS as of yet.
• Shuvit_ViperShuvit_Viper Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 62Members
they dont work in the NSTR... but will work in NS; cameras are even placeble by the commander...

but what i want in the game is the intro-movie that was the goal of NS... the alien team wont see it, so they get run/hide time, while the marines must wait for the movie to end. I want that if someone joins later he does not see the whole movie, but watches exactly what the other people see too...
• MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
Actually, the cameras placed by the commander will probably be different from a func_camera. Probably something along the lines of making aliens show up on the commander view.
