...
Have some levels that take place on planets- lets say one of our ships is having a battle, and a skulk @#$%s over the drive system, and it crashes on an abandond planet. Like?
wrong forum i would say.....
Well if you're looking for anything wide open, that isn't anything but a bunch of caves, no. Otherwise it's a good idea, a mine map of some such, though I do believe someone is making a mine map. Though anything involving sky I think is a nono, open areas = dead aliens.
How about they manage to crash land in a large canyon (think grand canyon size) with tunnels and caves leading to places. Although, having medpacks drop out of midair would be confusing (Perhaps have it a planet that was being terraformed by nanobots in the air slowly changing the atmosphere, and the TSA somehow hacks into their control to allow for a nanogrid that can serve them?) and the ship was bringing back an alien hive, the ship broke up and the aliens hive landed in a different location. the marines now have to fight for a planet.
Hrmm..... the possibility of an official map for NS that takes place on a planet is unlikely, because it doesn't fit the setting, and there are map guidelines (no wide open areas, etc.)
id love to see some jungle type map, it wouldnt have to be very open. it could, as mentioned above, have the story of a ship crashing. and half the map could take place inside the ship and the other outside in a jungle type area. the 3 hive placements could be 1 in the ship and 2 in the jungle or vice versa, where the "bacterium" has leaked out of the ship.
From my point of view, the reason that outdoor maps are not possible gameplay-wise is two-fold: 1. The skulk could theoretically walk on the sky-box. 2. The melee-styled aliens would have NO cover whatsoever.
Well, I think both can be fixed. The first can be fixed by placing either a trigger hurt box, or a trigger kill box, reasonably high up, so the skulks and jetpackers would not dare think of flying or climbinng too high. For those of you that craves a reasonable explanation for everything...then hell let's just say on that planet, the air thins out dramatically with altitude change.
The second can be fixed rather easily...have an extremely rocky outdoor-surface, with lots of bumps and rock formations, since the melee-styled aliens are usually rather small it should be no problem ambushing marines.
I'd really love to see something go down in a cave system, mines, or a dense jungle even.
It wouldn't be official, but a good map is a good map, and people play good maps. So all you uber-mappers out there, get workin on this stuff, we are hungry for more maps.
What might be a lot of fun is if you got to play on a map while this was in progress, so you're starting out on a fully-powered ship, then there's an explosion and part of the ship goes dark, some corridors are blocked off, there's generally a lot of damage. Then there's a massive amount of shaking, and suddenly a quarter of the ship is gone and you're on a thick jungle-covered planet. And if you set it in a rainforest, you have the perfect reasoning behind corridors (extremely thick foliage) and non-open sky (canopy). Something like that would be awesome.
Maybe that should be the training mission

what if a meteor crashed into a small town, so they evacuated everyone and put a big dome around it, like quarantine. then aliens emerge from the meteor then then send in the marines to kill them
I'll put in another vote for the cave idea...it might provide an interesting new style that's still very NS...in fact, a mine could be a great setting for it, because you can incorperate lots of high tech gear, and keep entrances closed and stuff. (Not to mention the idea of being stuck underground with a bnuch of kharaa is quite chilling)
a cave? ughhh I still like the idea of marines getting on a ship (lost contact of crew, so they were sent to investigate) marines start in..lets say...docking bay? aliens start in some random hive on the ship and WALLAH! map the only problem is the res towers, lol i wouldn't know where the gas would come from
I think a jungle map would be sweet, but unfortunately, I don't think it can possibly be done well. Why? Skulks need to be able to climb around on walls. If there were a good jungle map, it would have lots of trees on the sides of the jungle 'corridor' and not just a flat wall with a picture of trees on it. But if there weren't a flat wall, the skulks coudn't climb on it.
A mine map is completely doable tho, and sounds really cool. The marine base could be outside, at the entrance to the mine. There could be several tunnels coming out of the ground there, including smaller aliens/jetpacks-only tunnels. There could be clumps of trees where skulks could hide... Good stuff.
yeah, but a mine map might be a bit.. dull. and skulks need smooth walls to climb on

And hey, its just not NS style
