More or less the same...

Marines to save the day..
I've noticed that a LOT of the maps are geared towards the Marines invading to wipe out the alien infestation..

However, I've noticed that no one has made a map yet where aliens would be the ones trying to take over the base, station or map, and for THEM to wipe out the HUMAN infestation..

Oh yeah, and since we have spaceships, we can probally afford to light them better So if someone makes this type of map, I hope to see the MAJORITY of it well-lit...Give the marines the advantage in this map, as opposed to the aliens.

I thought most maps where made so that both side's have to defend and attack, or am i wrong ?

I wasn't aware that the marines were the ones infesting spaceships, and so forth. Both teams are supposed to wipe the other team out, but I doubt that a space ship would be the preferred environment for the aliens. I imagine that the aliens mostly are just taking what they can get, and trying to survive in whatever way they can. The aliens dont have a boss saying "Now go out and get those humans, fellas!"

Also, the only real story we have on the aliens is that they are being cleared out of space stations. We can't make up our own, entirely original plots, because if they conflict with what the NS team finally puts out, we'll have to change it.

Besides, Malice is right -- both teams are supposed to attack and defend. There isn't an attack/defend mode like in TFC, both teams are doing both.

About the lights: dark is usually considered scarier/more dramatic than a nice, well lit place. Would you actually want to play on a map with no dramatic lighting, where everything is working properly? This is a game, not real life. I think invading aliens are a bit more far-fetched than dim lighting. After all, maybe the aliens forgot to pay the power bill last month

They are, Kinda, but most maps are also dark, giving aliens a slight advantage, and most of the storylines seem to be the TSA Marines trying to destroy the "Alien infestation"..

and you get this feeling from most of the maps because of the destruction and darkness.

What I'd like to see is one well-lit Spaceship where the aliens havn't infested it, except for a part near their hives. I.e. No damaged stuff except near the hives, no darkness except near the hives. If I had any mapping skills myself, I'd make such a map, but I don't have the skills to do it justice like Relic, Narby, Merk, Fam, Ken, and all the others can.

Darkness gets Mundane rather quickly. If you're good at mapping, Then you should be able to EASILY make a well-lit map interesting.

If I could direct your attention to the Mapping Guidelines you will read in there that it is the wish of the developers for maps to transition from light, intact areas to dark, damaged areas to create a building sense of suspense as the players draw closer to the hives.

Notice Bold words. Notice the fact that it wouldn't violate any guidelines. Notice that Mappers tend to like to be creative. Notice the fact that Mapping doesn't ALWAYS have to be "Dim, Spooky, and scary" to create a great mood.

And Notice that it wouldn't violate the storline either. Nothing says the aliens can't attack a TSA patrolled ship, with TSA Marines already inside. Nothing says the Aliens can't be just commencing their invasion on the map, with only a small amount of it infested.

    (Notice the many notices.)

WOW, i got something right for once
And for the lighting, i think that if a ship had been taken over my aliens they would have took out the lights so that they have an advantage over the merines.

Well.. I don't know, Jed. I'm definitely not interested in doing a really bright map. While the hi-tech lab side of my level is a bit brighter, and lacking in the shadows... I really wouldn't want to consider -or advise- doing a mostly bright map.

On that note, ns_bast (as you can see from the screenshots) is fairly clean and proper looking. At least until you get to the hive areas. Yet it is still very atmospheric and dramatic. Or were you thinking something more along the lines of.. eh.. really bright?

why not make a map about an abbondenned (geez, I really have no idea how to spell that ) space-ship or something like that, that has crashed something like 10-20 years ago, and was totally forgot by humans. untill they find it again, and COMPLETELY infested by aliens.

this map would be: aliens invading to whipe out the 'infesting' (;)) marines!

Thats not a bad idea, somebody shuold do that, it would be sw33t

Well, I'm not going to get into a drawn out discussion about lighting. Everybody has their own ideas on lighting, and that is rightfully so.

However ... just being different than everybody isn't quite the same as being creative. I'll leave it at that.

I don't think the Aliens would purposly knock out the lights. I think it would just be accidental. In my mind, the aliens do not have a strong enough understanding of how us Humans work and what our techology can do. After all, they are most biological and organic, while pour weapons are not.

The fact is, the story as it stands now is TSA marines moving into areas to wipe out an alien presence. The aliens are spreading, sure... but they're taking over civilian stations, outposts, etc. By the time the TSA gets there, the damage has already been done.

Aliens taking over/clearing out marines would be similar to the "assault" style maps that were brought up in the Ideas forum (where this thread should probably be). It's a different game.

And as for lighting... expect infestation to short out/cover up light sources. Therefore, expect lighting to be fairly spotty as you get closer to the hives. I have no objection to light areas by the marine start, where the aliens haven't reached yet... but you can't take a room like Hera's third hive and tell me it's going to be brightly lit.
