How Many Rt's Before Hive?

MrPinkMrPink Join Date: 2002-05-28 Member: 678Members
Does anyone have the numbers on how long it takes to get a hive as gorge if you build x amount of RT's? It would be interesting to see the ideal number, such as build 2 RT's and it takes 5 minutes, 29 seconds, build 3 RT's and it takes 5 minutes, 12 seconds. Otherwise, just post your opinions and what you normally do.

    eh, there are other factors however ..

    such as number of gorges and RP usage of team mates ...

    I'd say go use the bots to test it but they all go gorge =[

    I build 3 res towers (so 4 total) then save for hive.

    Tough to say, seeing how the number of players on your team has a heavy influence on it.

    However, if you want to do the math, here's the numbers:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->(10 + num_players * 2.3 * num_resource_towers) * num_enemy_players/num_own_players

    income per minute (or rather, they get one tenth of that every six seconds).

    For the aliens, the resources are shared, with every live alien getting one share except gorges who gets three shares. So, in a four player game, with three skulks and one gorge, the total number of shares are six, so each skulk gets 1/6 of the resources, while the gorge gets 3/6.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    My math is a little rusty, but here's some numbers for you.

    Lets assume 7 skulks, 1 gorge. Up against 8 marines.
    (10 + 16 * 2.3 * n) * 8/8
    Works out to:
    Total team income in these conditions is (59.8 * n) per minute where n is the number of towers.
    Gorge gets 3 shares, skulks get 1 share each. That's 3/11th of the team income.
    Assuming my math didn't fail me, this tells us that gorge gets 16.3 resources per minute per tower.
    Target of course is 80 resources.
    We'll assume the Gorge starts with 0 resources.
    <!--c1--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->
    n   Income/Minute Minutes To Hive
    --  -------------        ---------------
    1   16.3                 4.9 minutes
    2   32.6                 2.45 minutes
    3   48.9                 1.635 minutes
    4   65.2                 1.226 minutes
    5   81.5                 0.988 minutes
    6   97.8                 0.818 minutes
    <!--c2--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->
    Of course, this makes some silly assumptions. It assumes that the gorge didn't take the time to build some defences stop the marines from walzing right in and shooting him. It assumes there's no other gorges on team. It also assumes that no skulks at any point were full of resources, thereby preventing them from "overflowing" onto the Gorge because they never hit the 33 resource limit.

    Perhaps strategy would be a better way to look at it.

    I think the best strategy is (surprise) two gorges. While this slightly slows resource income for one gorge, it increases the amount of resources going towards both gorges by grabbing 4 extra skulks worth of resources for the both of them combined.

    One gorge heads to a hive the marines haven't occupied, with a skulk or tow to give him advance warning if any marines are coming and eat them if they try to kill the gorge. This gorge builds a nearby RT or two, then the hive.

    Gorge number two heads towards the middle of the map and takes any unattentended resource towers (one or two) then builds some token defences to impede marine advance. He also has a skulk or two to defend himself and provide recon as well.

    If all goes well (yes, I know, big if) at this point through the efforts of both gorges you could be at 5 or 6 resource towers by now, which should provide adequette amounts of resources to quickly bring up the second hive and build some good walls of arse at vital choke points.

    Of course, if you try to do this on a public server, people would whine that there's too many gorges. Hah, n00bs.

    This is how many resources <b>each</b> gorge would get with different teamsizes:

    6 v 6
    1 gorge: 37.5%; 13.8 res/min from every RT
    2 gorges: 30% each; 11.04 res/min from every RT
    3 gorges: 25% each; 9.2 res/min from every RT

    8 v 8
    1 gorge: 30%; 12.42 res/min from every RT
    2 gorges: 25% each; 10.35 res/min from every RT
    3 gorges: 21.4% each; 8.86 res/min from every RT

    10 v 10
    1 gorge: 25%; 11.5 res/min from every RT
    2 gorges: 21.4% each; 9.84 res/min from every RT
    3 gorges: 18.8% each; 8.65 res/min from every RT

    12 v 12
    1 gorge: 21.4%; 10.82 res/min from every RT
    2 gorges: 18.8% each; 9.51 res/min from every RT
    3 gorges: 16.7% each; 8.45 res/min from every RT

    I've got a <a href='http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~matso/resmdl.xls' target='_blank'>spreadsheet</a> that shows the incomes and timings for gorges. I've used it as data for an article on "Balancing large server resources", so it contains two resource models, but it shows some pretty standard openings (simplified, of course, but...).
