FireStorm

ping = time in miliseconds that a packet, sent from your computer to the server, takes to return.

YOUR COMPUTER:
- Sends a ping packet
- Remembers the time (let's call it time1)

the packet is travelling across the net...

THE SERVER:
- Recieves your ping packet
- Sends it back to you

the packet is travelling across the net...

YOUR COMPUTER:
- Gets the packet
- Remembers the actual time (time2)
- Computes the ping: ( time2 - time 1 )

SO: Lower ping = better

If you have a 56k your ping will be higher, but you can configure HL to send a good amount of data for your bandwidth. you can set some CVARS like rate, cl_cmdrate, cl_lc, cl_lw ...

and what should i put them to if iam 56K?

It is better to have a fairly fast comp speed too.

But with the game being so old it properbly won't matter.
