Ranking Systems?

<div class="IPBDescription">Just a suggestion</div> I've been trolli--reading these boards for a while and i havn't noticed any "ranking system" threads. Not to say that it has never been done. It probobly has been...about a million times and i've just missed them all...anyway back on track.

Marines don't have their kills show up as we all know. Which is great it promotes teamwork. But what do you guys think about promotions. Nothing to make a huge deal about, just an ego booster you can brag to all your friends about with your l33tness ;p . Say you kill a skulk, you get say 1 "promotion point" you kill a gorge you get 3, fade: 5, onos: 10 so on and so forth. Once you get to about 10 points you get a small marking by your name just to signify ranks. Start out as a private, and just go through the ranks with the military symbol by your name.

But you don't just get points for killing aliens. You get points for helping put up a structure, taking down enemy structures, destroying the hive, welding teammate or so. I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to program in, but then again the farthest i've ever gotten in programming was a "B" in visual basic sophomore year ;p But i think that'd be a great idea having the rank by your name. The commander has his own rank and is at the top of the list and it goes in decending order all the way down to the privates. The ranks should be based on field soldier's rank (y'know we don't really want 5 star generals taking down skulks) but i dunno.

Right, the instant problem with a system like that is, it promotes 1337ness. Which is a <i>BAD THING</i>. If players who play a lot get to claim they're somehow <i>better</i> than those who don't, you create the sort of issues that Battle.net has, with people with no lives living on there controlling the system.

Neat idea, but one that's not going to work, sorry.

Never been to battle.net but i fail to see how it is much differant if not less "i'm more uber than you" than the aliens who do in fact show score.

basically, the whole internet community needs to grow up before online gaming will reach its prime.

The internet community <i>was</i> grown up until it became mainstream.

well internet gaming went mainstream when it became accessible to any joe blow who could turn on a computer. This isn't anything new; you think there were many musicians before the advent of the electric guitar? No, because the electric guitar was the first instrument to make music fun and easy.

Once things become fun and easy, that's when then the punks show up (<i>POP</i> punks, in the case of guitar *shudder*), thank you AOL.
